Les Chardons have not tasted victory since the opening day of the season and a winless run of 10 matches in all competitions has left confidence understandably low.
The pressure is mounting on Fernandez and he is desperate to lift his side out of their slump - starting at Nice on Saturday - but is convinced they need to return to what worked last season, when they finished 11th.
"Defence was our strength last season," Fernandez told the club's official website.
"Therefore we must first defend well but also try to score goals. It is what we have been saying for several weeks."
The Lorraine club produced a battling performance against league leaders Paris St Germain last week before Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 74th-minute goal gave Carlo Ancelotti's men the three points.
"I remember more frustration than taking the positives from this defeat," Fernandez added.
"I also think that our good first half is due to the imbalance of PSG. Nice, this game will be different."
Nancy captain Andre Luiz is expected to feature despite suffering from flu this week, while striker Benjamin Moukandjo should shake off a foot injury.
Nice are also struggling this season and are just four points ahead of tomorrow's visitors but they will be buoyed by a surprise 3-1 win over Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue in midweek.
While the clash with Nancy represents the perfect chance to kick-start their league campaign, goalkeeper Joris Delle is refusing to take victory for granted.
"They have trouble scoring," he told Nice's website. "But we must always be wary of these teams.
"We must be vigilant, especially as they have the quality, the experience and a coach who knows how to handle these situations."
