Teenager Aaron Ramsey scored his first international goal against Liechtenstein - and then maintained that the young Wales players can handle the pressures at the top.

The Arsenal midfielder struck home a fine free-kick in the final minutes to clinch Wednesday's 2-0 victory in Liechtenstein to bring the curtain down on another failed World Cup bid.

With pressure mounting on boss John Toshack, Ramsey said: "We were aware of the criticism and pressure. But that is something you have to handle as a professional, even if a few of us are pretty young.

"We adapted well to all of that, we had a lot of youngsters on the pitch, but we were determined to pull together and get the right result.

"If you are a footballer you have to deal with everything, if you can't then you will not make progress as a player."

He added: "I was delighted with my goal, but overall it was a good night for us because we had to work really hard because this is not an easy place (to play) by any means.

"Finland only drew (here), Russia won just 1-0. So we knew what it would be like.

"But we stuck at it and tried our hardest, and it finally came off for us. People expected us to win, but it was never going to be that easy.

"I was happy with the way we got forward, Gareth Bale and Chris Gunter both got a lot of joy down the lines and I was able to find them both with passes regularly.

"Once we got our first goal it settled everyone down and we worked really hard in the second half to maintain our lead.

"We were under the cosh a bit, but when the second one went in that calmed us down."

Blackpool midfielder David Vaughan has probably emerged with most to be pleased about after nearly two years without a start for his country.

He won praise for creating a fine goal for Craig Bellamy in Finland on Saturday, and was on hand to score his debut goal for his country in Liechtenstein.

He said: "I have had a pretty good few days for Wales, as well as having got back into the squad.

"Playing well is a bonus, so the games have been good for me. I got a lot of credit for helping create our goal in Finland and this time it was me getting onto the end of a good cross.

"It is hard not to take any notice of the things that get said in the build-up to a match.

"The players knew we were better that the way we played on Saturday in Finland. Now we can build on this for the next campaign.

"I was happy with my goal and happy Aaron got his too. He is a very talented young man, and he will be the mainstay of Wales' team for the next 10 years or so.

"I had been out of the squad for a while, but that was because of injury and things going on at home so it is just pleasing to have got back into the squad and being able to contribute with a goal and an assist."
