CANNAVARO: WE THOUGHT WE'D WON

Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro refused to apportion blame after his team failed to keep the 1-0 lead they held deep into stoppage time in last night's European Championship final.

David Trezeguet scored the golden goal that won the Henri Delauney trophy for France with his thunderous shot in the first half of extra-time after a rare Italian defensive mix-up.

But Sylvain Wiltord's late, late strike to equalise Marco Delvecchio's opener and send the game into extra-time only came after Alessandro del Piero missed two gilt-edged chances to seal the victory.

But Cannavaro said: "Our mistake was to believe we had already won.

"We should have held up the ball more and we were punished for not doing so. We're still angry about it."
