 EURO 2008 REPORTS
Picture Shevchenko - scored the equaliser.

Ukraine 2 France 2

A second-half header by Andriy Shevchenko earned Ukraine a point from their Euro 2008 qualifying Group B dead rubber against France in Kiev.

The hosts had gone ahead early on through Andriy Voronin, but well-taken goals by Thierry Henry and Sidney Govou put the French - who had already qualified for next summer's finals - in front.

However, France goalkeeper Sebastien Frey failed to deal with Shevchenko's looping header in the opening minutes of the second half, meaning the spoils were shared on a freezing night in the Ukraine capital.

France started the match well, dominating possession and seeing Lassana Diarra and Claude Makelele boss the centre of midfield.

It was therefore against the run of play when the Ukrainians, out of the running for qualification, broke the deadlock in the 14th minute.

A cross from the right reached Oleh Gusev, and the midfielder laid the ball back for Voronin to unleash a low shot that flew into the net from 20 yards out.

Les Bleus deservedly equalised six minutes later.

Henry controlled Claude Makelele's pass before finding space - owing to the ball ricocheting into his path - and curling a fine left-foot shot round goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

Shevchenko had a stinging shot saved by Frey, but France still looked dangerous and they took the lead for the first time in the 32nd minute.

Govou spun his marker and played a one-two with Karim Benzema before shaping his body and bending a curling effort from the left channel into the corner.

Benzema and Franck Ribery fired shots just over before the break, but Ukraine were gifted an equaliser by Frey at the start of the second half.

Shevchenko's looping header from a deep, left-wing cross looked harmless, but the Fiorentina custodian failed in his attempt to catch the ball one-handed and only succeeded in tipping it into his own net.

Shevchenko and Henry both volleyed wide before Serghiy Fedorov headed a golden chance past the post from close range.

The game's last opportunity fell to France right-back Francois Clerc, who headed over Ribery's corner.
