 EURO 2008 REPORTS
Picture Scolari and Ronaldo celebrate qualification.

Portugal 0 Finland 0

Portugal secured the point they needed against Finland to advance to the finals of Euro 2008.

The home side certainly did not play for a draw, however, and only a wonderful performance from Finnish keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen prevented Luiz Felipe Scolari's men from recording a comfortable triumph.

The visitors knew only a win would be enough but they rarely threatened with their best chance coming in a frantic finale with home defender Bruno Alves slicing inches wide of his own goal.

Portugal dominated the first half but a combination of poor finishing and fine goalkeeping from Jaaskelainen prevented them from taking the lead.

The hosts' first effort came after just two minutes, Ricardo Quaresma firing in a shot which was gathered by Jaaskelainen.

The Bolton keeper excelled again after 10 minutes by tipping Cristiano Ronaldo's 25-yard free-kick over the bar.

The one-way traffic continued. Quaresma was again denied while a Ronaldo header from a Miguel Veloso free-kick was tipped over by the impressive Jaaskelainen.

It took Finland 42 minutes to threaten home keeper Ricardo, Joonas Kolkka lashing in a shot which drifted inches over the top left-hand corner.

Portugal quickly regained the initiative after the break but they again came up against a man inspired in Jaaskelainen.

After 51 minutes, Veloso whipped in a right-wing corner which Nuno Gomes directed on goal but Jaaskelainen produced another wonder stop low to his right.

There looked to be no way past the inspired keeper and he produced two more great stops, one on the hour mark to deny Quaresma and another with 10 minutes to go to deny the Porto man.

Finland launched a late bid to snatch it but the closest they came was when Alves almost put through his own goal.
