The highly talented striker has had, by his standards, a tough season.
Put in the Nou Camp shade by Ronaldinho, Kluivert's form with Barcelona was far from vintage and he faces a tough challenge to raise his game this summer.
The biggest problem in Portugal will be a rocky relationship with fellow striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Kluivert has questioned national coach Dick Advocaat's tactics and said he would rather be playing up front by himself for the Oranje.
But when Advocaat selected a lone striker in the decisive play-off second leg with Scotland it was the Manchester United man who started alongside playmaker Rafael van der Vaart, smashing a hat-trick in a 6-0 mauling.
This has forced Kluivert to back-track somewhat and he has since insisted the pair could play together.
Advocaat could yet heed that advice and re-instate the duo but he is not short of options with Bayern Munich goal-machine Roy Makaay available up front while van der Vaart could again spearhead a five-man midfield.
Kluivert has consistently been linked with a move to England and Newcastle are thought to be back in the frame for a possible bid this summer.
The interest is certainly understandable as Kluivert has enjoyed an incredible career since bursting onto the scene with the winning goal in Ajax's 1995 European Cup triumph over AC Milan.
An exceptional first touch and a predatory instinct in front of goal have helped Kluivert become Holland's leading goalscorer of all time, but it remains to be seen whether he will be given the chance to add to his tally this summer.
