The back injury that caused Johann Lonfat to pull out of Switzerland's squad for Euro 2004 gave Barnetta a late opportunity to travel to Portugal.
At just 19 the midfielderwill travel to the tournament without a full international cap to his name.
Barnetta has been called up from the Switzerland side who recently competed in the European Under-21 Championship.
Though the Swiss side went out at the group stage, Barnetta did find the net in the 3-1 defeat to Sweden.
Having been with St Gallen since he was a boy, Barnetta attracted the interest of Bayer Leverkusen and will join the Bundesliga club following Euro 2004.
