Berner was a regular face in the Freiburg team that successfully avoided relegation from the Bundesliga last season.
The defender joined the club from Grasshoppers in the summer of 2002 and in his first year there he helped them win promotion back to Germany's top flight.
Berner was an ever-present in Switzerland's squad for qualifying though in the majority of games he started as substitute.
The 26-year-old will be fighting for a starting place in Portugal and his strength and current form will aid Switzerland whether he starts as a substitute or in his favoured left-back role.
