Having spent the last season on loan to Barcelona, Arsenal finally agreed to allow van Bronckhorst a permanent move to the Nou Camp just weeks before the start of Euro 2004.
Much of the 29-year-old's time at Highbury was spent on the sidelines recovering from serious injury though he was part of the Gunners side that secured the league and cup Double in the 2001/2002 season.
Van Bronckhorst joined Arsenal from Rangers for £8.5million after his high-energy displays in the centre and out wide impressed Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Current Holland coach Dick Advocaat was the man who took van Bronckhorst to Rangers, paying £5million to Feyenoord to secure his services in 1998.
Played in a more defensive role at Ibrox, van Bronckhorst won all there is to win in Scotland's domestic game.
Good on the ball and a neat passer, van Bronckhorst has suffered from Holland's vast array of talent and has won less caps than one would expect from a player who made his international debut in 1996.
Since Advocaat has been in charge of Holland, van Bronckhorst has been given a good run in the team and played in the majority of the qualifiers for the finals.
A successful season at Barcelona (the Catalans came second in the Primera Liga) has further boosted van Bronckhorst's chances of starting in Portugal.
