Hansson was, along with fellow defender Erik Wahlstedt, a suprise inclusion in Sweden's squad to go to Portugal.
Despite having only four caps when Lars Lagerback and Tommy Soderberg announced their 23-man squad Hansson timed his run into the team perfectly playing in the international friendlies against Albania, England and Portugal in the build-up to the tournament.
Along with Erik Edman the 27-year-old has enjoyed a successful club season with Heerenveen in the Dutch league, helping them qualify for the UEFA Cup.
The tall defender is also capable of finding the net having scored twice for Heerenveen in the domestic season.
