Dubbed the Spanish Luis Figo, Joaquin made his international debut against the real thing in a friendly match with Portugal in Feburary 2002.
And the right-winger impressed enough to claim a place in Jose Antonio Camacho's World Cup squad.
Joaquin featured in two matches there and showed the world just why he is so highly rated.
Following a man-of-the-match performance against South Korea, he missed a vital penalty in the shootout which resulted in Spain being dumped out of the competition at the quarter-final stage.
He has remained at his hometown club Real Betis throughout his short career and has shown he is capable of playing in the centre as well as terrorising defenders on the wing.
In the qualifiers for Euro 2004 Joaquin was used more sparingly and regularly came on as a substitute.
Given his chance, though, the tricky winger is capable of causing problems for any defence in the competition.
