Penalty 12: Helder Postiga scores. The substitute lets James dive left and dinks a chip down the middle. 5-5.

Penalty 11: Ashley Cole scores. The full-back follows Maniche, low to the keeper's rightt. 4-5.

Penalty 8: Cristiano Ronaldo scores. The winger stops in his run-up, allows James to commit himself and drives home. 3-3.

Penalty 7: John Terry scores. The central defender drives high down the middle and Ricardo looks on with desperation as he dives right. 2-3.

Penalty 6: Rui Costa misses. Portugal's second goalscorer fires over the top-right corner of the goal. Like Beckham. he inspects the penalty spot with suspicion. It appears to be crumbling into sand under any kind of pressure. 2-2.

Penalty 5: Frank Lampard scores. He follows Owen, driving low down the middle as Ricardo goes left. 2-2.

Penalty 4: Simao scores. He sends the keeper the wrong way, firing a high, unstoppable drive to James' right. 2-1.

Penalty 3: Michael Owen scores. The penalty is a poor one, low and hard down the middle but Ricardo dives to his left and England escape. 1-1.

Penalty 2: Deco scores. The Portugal midfielder strokes the ball to James' left as the keeper dives the other way. 1-0.

Penalty 1: David Beckham misses. The England captain slices the ball high and wide of Ricardo's left-hand post. 0-0.

Full-time: Portugal 2 England 2

120 mins: The corner is flapped at by Ricardo but England cannot take advantage. The full-time whistle blows. Penalties to be taken.

120 mins: Beckham's free-kick is headed behind for a corner.

119 mins: James completely misses the ball but so does everybbody else. England counter and Vassell's exceptional pace draws a foul from Carvalho on the corner of the area. Yellow card.

118 mins: A long ball forward sees Campbell and James fail to communicate and the Arsenal defender heads behind for a left-wing corner.

117 mins: Gary Neville and Beckham attack down the right but the England captain cannot catch a return pass. Goal-kick.

116 mins: The game re-starts and Owen charges down Ricardo's clearance. It falls to Cole in the centre circle and he tries to lob the keeper but cannot connect properly and the chance passes.

115 mins: GOAL LAMPARD. Terry leads a charge down the right and Gary Neville's cross is deflected behind for a right-wing corner. Beckham's set-piece is headed down by Terry and it falls perfectly for Lampard, back to goal, eight yards out. He turns and fires into Ricardo's net, beating the keeper for pace rather than placement, and England are level.

114 mins: Portugal again counter with three on three and Gomes gets off a shot from the left of the area, firing across the face of goal and wide of James' goal.

113 mins: England push on and Gary Neville gets into a great crossing position but Hargreaves is outjumped in the penalty area.

112 mins: Ronaldo's eventual delivery is turned out of an empty penalty area by Campbell. Hargreaves pushes on down the left but his far-post cross lacks the shape for Beckham to get any power on his header and Ricardo gathers comfortably.

111 mins: England push forward keenly and over-commit. Ronaldo is given the ball on the counter but runs the ball into the corner rather than cross.

110 mins: GOAL RUI COSTA. Rui Costa collects the ball 30 yards out and shrugs off Phil Neville's feeble challenge. He shoots from the edge of the area, left-hand side, and fires an unstoppable shot into the roof of James' net.

109 mins: There is a mad goalmouth scramble and Cole has to hack clear off the line.

108 mins: Rui Costa is allowed to dribble into the area before meeting a challenge. He slips it wide to Ronaldo and the cross is blocked for a corner by Cole.

107 mins: England lump it forward but Ricardo finds Ronaldo before Vassell can intercept. The teenage winger has another go at Cole but again finds the Arsenal full-back an immovable object.

106 mins: Rui Costa is again afforded too much space and Postiga misses his kick with no real challenge.

105 mins: Portugal get the second period under way.

Half-time of Extra time: Portugal 1 England 1

105 mins: Rui Costa releases Ronaldo down the right and Cole runs 50 yards before making a brilliant sliding tackle. England win the ball from the throw and the impressive Hargreaves hacks clear. Meier blows the whistle to signal that the match is going to 120 minutes.

104 mins: Phil Neville chips forward and Campbell heads across goal. No-one is there but Owen collects on the left wing and gives to Lampard. His attempted 18-yarder is blocked at point-blank range.

103 mins: England win a midfield free-kick after a trip on Hargreaves.

102 mins: Rui Costa and Gomes both have chances from 15 yards. Campbell makes to exceptional blocks as other England defenders hesitate. He has been immense this evening.

101 mins: England create a chance. Vassell and Hargreaves combine down the left and the Bayern midfielder's far-post cross is headed wide by Beckham. A costly miss.

100 mins: It is difficult to see England scoring at present.

99 mins: Portugal keep up the pressure, England simply cannot retain possession at present.

98 mins: England push forward and Hargreaves is fouled but no free-kick is forthcoming. The ball is played through midfield and the ball lifted to the on-rushing Nuno gomes for a one-on-one. He goes to ground after brusing past Gary Neville bu Meier again dismisses groundless penalty appeals.

97 mins: The left-wing set-piece is headed across the face of goal and cleared off James' left-hand post by Phil Neville.

96 mins: Portugal push into the left-hand of the area and Postiga tries to lift the ball over Terry. The ball strikes the Chelsea man in the face and goes out for a corner, referee Meier rightly disregarding Postiga's disingenuous penalty appeals.

95 mins: England push on down the right and win a throw. The Neville brothers work an opening for Vassell but he is again outjumped by Carvalho.

94 mins: Portugal break forward again, they are playing with much more confidence than their opponents at present. Rui Costa feeds Ronaldo but the winger is dispossessed by Cole. James lumps the ball forward and, with crushing inevitability, Vassell is outjumped by Carvalho.

93 mins: The free-kick is headed clear as far as his Rui Costa and the offside flag raised as the Milan midfielder shoots.

92 mins: Phil Neville brings down Ronaldo with a rash challenge on the hosts' left.

91 mins: Vassell pushes on down the left but Carvalho is too strong and dispossesses.

90 mins: Extra-time gets under way.

End of normal time: Portugal 1 England 1

90 mins: Full-time with the game headed to silver goal extra-time. England have been denied a goal and victory by weak refeering from referee Urs Meier. However, the home side could and arguably should have won the game before that after totally dominating the second half. Sven Goran Eriksson has already used his three substitutes and has a very defensive-minded midfield and one-dimensional attack but the Swede nevertheless needs to bring about changes after a poor second-half display. The positive is that Portugal have a similarly lop-sided team with two strikers, two wingers and two playmakers so there should be space to exploit. If one team is leading after 105 minutes, that team will go through to the semi-finals. If the scores are level after 105 minutes, a full 120 minutes will be played. If the scores are level after 120 minutes, the match will be decided on penalties.

90 mins: England are nearly caught on the counter attack but Cole continues to excel, intercepting.

90 mins: Beckham swings the ball under the bar and Campbell heads firmly against the crossbar. Campbell climbs on Terry to beat Ricardo to the re-bound, heading home from close range, but the referee incorrectly disallows the goal.

90 mins: Hargreaves wins a free-kick within yards of the corner. Beckham comes across to take.

89 mins: A hopeless long ball from Phil Neville unsurprisingly sees Owen out-muscled by Carvalho and Andrade. Hargreaves does superbly to pressure a throw-in down the left from the loose ball.

88 mins: Portugal push forward down the right and Deco tries to swing a ball into the far post but sees the ball drift out for a goal-kick.

87 mins: England enjoy a moment's repsite, pushing Portugal back into their half but the hosts still have the ball.

86 mins: Rui Costa tries a run and shot from 30 yards but skies the ball high over the bar.

85 mins: Deco's chip forward is headed away by Terry but Portugal retain possession. Simao's cross is headed clear by Terry at the near post. England look to break and Vassell is cynically brought down by Deco. The Porto playmaker is booked.

84 mins: The game re-starts. Portugal immediately push on to win a free-kick 25 yards out in the inside-left channel. Only one team look like winning this now.

83 mins: GOAL POSTIGA. Simao pushes on down the left and is afforded far too much space to cross the ball by Beckham. Terry is caught flat-footed and Postiga has peeled off the defender to half-a-yard of space, heading home from eight yards.

82 mins: Owen Hargreaves replaces Gerrard on the left of midfield. Another disappointing display from the Liverpool man.

81 mins: Postiga turns nicely and picks out Gomes on the edge of the area. The striker's shot is blocked at point-blank range by the colossal Campbell.

80 mins: Rui Costa gets a first touch, spreading the play to Ronaldo but the winger is rightly flagged offside.

79 mins: Portugal take off Miguel, introducing Manuel Rui Costa.

78 mins: Vassell chases another long ball but is flagged offside. Portugal push down the left but Gary Neville is equal to Simao.

77 mins: Vassell tries to switch the play to Owen on the left but overhits the pass and possession is back with Portugal.

76 mins: Campbell powerfully heads the ball away and England take the chance to relieve the pressure by running the ball up field.

75 mins: The hosts hit back and Figo's shot draws a superb right-handed save from James for a corner. Helder Postiga replaces Figo for Portugal.

74 mins: Real end-to-end stuff now. Ricardo's throw launches a counter and Cole is required to make an interception on the edge of the area. His short ball finds Beckham and the skipper's 70-yard pass to Gerrard on the right is superb. The Liverpool midfielder's control lets him down and Ricardo gathers.

73 mins: Beckham's set-piece is half-cleared and the ball returned to the captain on the left. His control is dreadful and a home throw results. England keep the pressure up, Beckham spreading to Neville on the right. His cross seeks Beckham's on-rushing head on the penalty spot but Ricardo clears.

72 mins: Portugal again push on through Miguel and Figo but England intercept on the edge if the area. Vassell launches a direct counter, drawing a last-ditch sliding tackle from Carvalho to win a corner.

71 mins: Beckham's corner is met by Terry 15 yards out but his header is straight at Ricardo.

70 mins: Vassell shows his best qualities, chasing down Andrade with great pace and persistence to win a right-wing corner.

69 mins: Deco's corner is taken with great, and overdue, authority from James.

68 mins: England fail abysmally in attempts to retain possession and Portugal counter at speed. The move ends with Gomes in the area but he is not afforded space to shoot. England cannot clear properly and Ronaldo wins a right-wing corner from Cole.

67 mins: Vassell gets into a good position wide on the right, stretching the home defence. He receives the ball but delivers a poor cross and Carvalho blocks. Nevertheless England force a throw thanks to Gerrard.

66 mins: Simao nearly makes a spectacular impact upon arrival. He cuts in from the left before firing a right-foot shot wide of the right post.

65 mins: More possession play from Portugal. England need leadership and authority in midfield.

64 mins: Portugal keep up the pressure, passing the ball across midfield. They currently lack a cutting edge but England look vulnerable at present.

63 mins: Simao replaces Costinha. The hosts continue to push and England's defence, in particular Terry, are defending too deep. Figo swings in a dangerous right-wing cross and England are lucky to see it skip behind.

62 mins: Portugal look to push forward and Gomes makes space to shoot 20 yards out but James is able to gather the ball easily.

61 mins: Beckham and Phil Neville work the ball easily across midfield before spreading it to Gerrard who immediately concedes possession with a woeful lay-off to Vassell. Poor from England.

60 mins: Ronaldo tries to get in behind Gary Neville down the left but is well shepherded by his Manchester United team-mate and a goal-kick results.

59 mins: Good work down the right produces a half-chance for Ronaldo but the winger heads over. Meanwhile, Gerrard has moved out to the left with Phil Neville joining Lampard in central midfield.

58 mins: Ronaldo gets past Cole and the Arsenal man is lucky to escape a caution for hauling him down. Figo pushes on from the free-kick to force a corner. Figo's right-wing set-piece is only headed as far as Deco and Portugal maintain the pressure.

57 mins: England use the break to replace Scholes with Phil Neville. Beckham's eventual free-kick comes to nothing.

56 mins: Beckham makes an incisive run through midfield, drawing a trip from Costinha. The Portugal midfielder is booked.

55 mins: Beckham and Neville are again out-thought by Valente and Figo but the eventual cross is caught easily at the near post by James.

54 mins: Owen collects a Neville throw and turns inside Carvalho. He looks set to get a shot off but Carvalho makes up the ground well to block the run and Ricardo gathers.

53 mins: Cole overlaps to offer England some respite and, in a reversal of roles, Ronaldo tracks back to dispossess.

52 mins: Figo tries and fails to go past Lampard but Portugal regain the loose ball. England are under siege, defending far too deep, at present.

51 mins: A long ball forward is poorly dealt with by Campbell but Gomes is dispossessed by Cole on the edge of the area.

50 mins: Valente and Figo work well down the left and the full-back's cross curls towards the near joint of post and bar. James does not take cleanly and England are relieved that Gomes is penalised for his challenge on the keeper.

49 mins: Portugal throw men forward for the set-piece but James punches clear at the far post. Portugal keep up the pressure, again looking to utilise Ronaldo on the right but the winger cannot get onto the ball and a goal-kick results.

48 mins: Maniche and Deco combine to release Ronaldo down the right. Cole has to make his tackle perfect inside the area but does so, sliding the ball out for a corner.

47 mins: Maniche creates an opening for Figo on England's right-back corner of the area but curls a hopeful far-post shot well over the bar.

46 mins: Portugal start the half strongly retaining possession with confidence.

45 mins: Portugal kick off the second half with no further changes on either side.

Half-time: Portugal 0 England 1

45 mins: Beckham's set-piece is headed clear and the half-time whistle blows soon thereafter. England lead 1-0 through a typically brilliant piece of opportunism from Michael Owen but the subsequent performance has been less than polished; there have been chances at both ends but Portugal have enjoyed the better of midfield possession. Sven Goran Eriksson must be considering the introduction of Phil Neville or Owen Hargreaves to stem Deco's work while rueing the absence of Wayne Rooney, substituted after turning his ankle in a chase with Jorge Andrade. The Swede will also be anxious to improve his defence's positioning on set-pieces after another nervous half for David James.

45 mins: Vassell's tireless running finally earns a reward when he wins a free-kick for an Andrade push on the right flank.

45 mins: Figo lifts the ball over the wall and James' top-left corner to thunderous cheering from England fans.

44 mins: Another England attack breaks down when Vassell is penalised for little more than breathing. Portugal counter and Ronaldo outwits Neville to win a free-kick right on the edge of the area.

43 mins: The corner is initially cleared before Gomes fires straight at James. The goalkeeper holds but an England free-kick had in any case been given. Beckham is fouled by Maniche in the centre-circle but no caution follows to the England captain's disgust.

42 mins: The danger is not fully cleared and Lampard is penalised as he dispossesses Deco. The free-kick picks is drifted towards the ever-threatening Costinha at the far post but James comes out bravely to punch behind. The deep position of the England defenders on set-pieces remains an on-going concern.

41 mins: A Portuguese counter sees the hosts with three on three. Ronaldo tries a one-two with Gomes but receives a brilliant sliding tackle from Campbell.

40 mins: England attack down the right. Beckham has shown greater willing to stay out wide in this game and England have felt the benefit. Neville tries a long throw but Ricardo claims easily.

39 mins: Good work from Figo releases Miguel and the right-back's cross is overhit. Gomes makes his displeasure clear.

38 mins: Deco takes the free-kick himself, lifting a self-indulgent shot well over the bar.

37 mins: Costinha heads over from 15 yards. Portugal attack again with no prizes for guessing the instigator. Deco is hauled down by Gerrard, 30 yards out in the inside-left channel.

36 mins: Portugal attack down the right as the pendulum swings back and forth. Deco earns a right-wing corner.

35 mins: Beckham's left-wing corner picks out Vassell but his header is deflected over by Carvalho. A clear corner is awarded as a goal-kick, more unusual decisions from Meier.

34 mins: Deco looks to start another run in the centre-circle butn Scholes cuts inside to make a brilliant challenge. The continued absence of Gerrard and Lampard remains a concern, however. Beckham then feeds the overlapping Neville and he does very well to whip in a cross from the corner flag. Owen's near-post header is blocked over by Carvalho.

33 mins: Deco again makes his way through midfield all too easily but cannot trouble James with a wayward 30-yard shot.

32 mins: Portugal counter and Ronaldo - back on the left - has the ball on the edge of the area but Beckham tracks back magnificently to intercept.

31 mins: The corner is taken short to Lampard and he sweeps the ball across the face of goal but there's no-one there to take advantage. The ball is played into Vassell and Andrade makes a hash of his challenge but is inexplicably awarded a free-kick. England might have some concerns about the referee's performance thus far.

30 mins: Figo's right-foot effort loops over. Vassell then wins an unlikely flick-on from the goal-kick, putting through Owen and Ricardo has to be alert to make a good, strong stop high to his right. Corner.

29 mins: Ronaldo's dummy tricks Cole and the full-back sticks a leg out. The Portuguese teenager needs no encouragement to fall to ground and the hosts are given a free-kick on the edge of the area, right-hand side.

28 mins: Deco makes another mesmeric run, seeking Ronaldo in the inside-right channel but finding Cole there to block.

27 mins: Rooney is unable to continue and leaves the field of play. Darius Vassell takes the teenager's place alongside Owen.

26 mins: Rooney is back on as play continues. A left-wing cross picks out Gomes eight yards out and he glances a header wide of James' left-hand post. A let-off for England.

25 mins: Ronaldo terrorises Cole but is eventually crowded out. Miguel arrives on the overlap and his driven cross is deflected, James spills the ball but Gomes cannot get there and the keeper gathers at the second attempt, escaping punishment for a bad error.

24 mins: Rooney is taken off. He receives treatment on the touchline as England continue with ten men.

23 mins: Rooney is sitting down as play continues.

22 mins: A bizarre passage of play sees Rooney harass Andrade in the Portugal penalty area. He wins the ball but loses his boot and referee Urs Meier penalises the Everton striker by giving a free-kick.

21 mins: England take their turn to attack once more and Rooney and Owen combine to win another corner. Beckham picks out Campbell eight yards out and the Arsenal man heads over when he really should score.

20 mins: Portugal look to strike straight back and win a left-wing corner. The set-piece picks out Costinha at the far post and the midfielder should do better than head over at the far post.

19 mins: Beckham's intial set-piece is cleared back to the England captain and he plays the ball to Gerrard, 30 yards out in a central position. The Liverpool midfielder feeds Scholes on the edge and he turns a brilliant first-time pass across to Owen on the right of the area. The ball just won't sit down for the Liverpool forward and his eventual lob concedes a goal-kick.

18 mins: Owen and Rooney again do superbly, forcing a right-wing corner out of chasing a hopeful forward ball.

17 mins: Figo and Nuno Valente try to work an opening but Neville blocks and passes away. Lampard exchanges passes with Beckham but then gives away possession very cheaply. Portugal switch the play and Miguel fires over from the corner of the area.

16 mins: Deco's right-wing corner goes straight out of play before curling back in and England have a goal-kick. England have started positively with confidence on the ball and the obvious bonus of a goal. But Portugal have come back strongly and are applying serious pressure; it would be nice to see a bit more of a barrier from the England midfield.

15 mins: Deco's set-piece is brilliantly delivered towards Figo in the middle of the goal, ten yards out, and Terry does well to head to safety over his own bar.

14 mins: Maniche and Deco try to work an opening down the right but finds Ashley Cole a formidable barrier. From the throw-in Ronaldo pushes on Cole and is tripped within feet of the corner flag.

13 mins: Beckham's right-wing set-piece nearly finds Campbell and Terry but is a fraction too high and the ball skips away to the far side.

12 mins: Beckham's free-kick is blocked by the wall and Rooney reacts first, forcing a corner off goalkeeper Ricardo from a tight angle.

11 mins: England break through Owen and he feeds Rooney on the top of the area. He beats Carvalho with quick feet and is checked by the Porto man. Free-kick 20 yards out, inside-right channel.

10 mins: Paul Scholes is dispossessed in midfield and England do not receive the free-kick they expect. Figo breaks down the right and delivers a great cross which Nuno Gomes nearly turns across goal and into the far post but Sol Campbell gets enough of a block to turn it around the post. The corner is decisively punched away by James.

9 mins: The right-wing corner is swung into the area and nobody can get a decisive touch in either direction and England scramble clear.

8 mins: Maniche spearheads a break down the right but Ronaldo runs out of space. The play is spread to Figo but returned to Maniche via Deco and the Porto's midfielder's shot is tipped over by David James.

7 mins: Gerrard tries to find Owen down the left with a 50-yard ball but Miguel intercepts.

6 mins: Figo picks his way through Gary Neville and David Beckham down the left. His cross offers a half-chance to Nuno Gomes but the ball is blocked. It falls to Ronaldo on the edge of the six-yard box but again a mass of defenders smother the danger.

5 mins: Figo leads a charge down the left and is fouled by Gerrard.

4 mins: The game re-starts.

3 mins: GOAL OWEN. England launch a hopeful ball forward and Costinha tries to head clear from 30 yards out. Instead he deflects the ball between Ricardo Carvalho and Jorge Andrade and Owen has anticipated the run of the ball. The defelction takes it to his left rather than the expected right but Owen turns anti-clockwise through 270 degrees before catching the ball with a right foot volley to hook past Ricardo. An exceptional finish.

2 mins: Gerrard is fouled in midfield and England have the game's first free-kick.

1 min: Deco has the ball in an advanced position on the left but his cross is cleared by a combination of John Terry and Steven Gerrard.

0 mins: England kick off with Cristiano Ronaldo on the left and Luis Figo on the right for Portugal. Wayne Rooney almost immediately feeds Michael Owen for a one-on-one but the offside flag is raised.

Pre-match: England are looking to equal their best ever performance in a European Championship by booking a semi-final spot at the expense of host nation Portugal. They fell at the penultimate hurdle to Yugoslavia in 1968 and then were beaten in the infamous penalty shoot-out by Germany eight years ago. Sven-Goran Eriksson's side are facing a difficult task against opponents who have gradually improved after the shock of losing their opening game to Greece. Included in the Portuguese line-up is Nuno Gomes who scored the winning goal when his side came from 2-0 down to defeat England during Euro 2000. Gomes, who had also grabbed the only goal against Spain on Sunday, replaces the suspended Pauleta. England are also brimming with confidence after putting the disappointment of losing to France behind them to reach the last eight. They name an unchanged side for the third successive match. However, defender Ledley King is missing from the England bench after he went home to visit his girlfriend, who went into labour this morning. The interest in the match was such that touts are asking as much as £400 for tickets outside the Estadio da Luz, inside of which the England fans comfortably out-number the hosts'.
