Shakhtar Donetsk booked their place in the last 32 of the Europa League with victory in Toulouse on Thursday night.

Second-half goals from Luiz Adriano and Oleksiy Gai earned the defending champions their fourth successive win in Group J.

Toulouse were looking to make amends for the 4-0 hammering they suffered at the hands of Shakhtar a fortnight ago.

And Xavier Pentecote gave the visitors some food for thought after five minutes with a curling right-footed effort which flew narrowly wide.

Toulouse threatened again minutes later through Pantxi Sirieix, whose 18-yard drive just cleared the crossbar.

Tomas Hubschman gave Shakhtar some breathing space with their first chance of the match, firing past the post from distance.

But Toulouse had by far the better of the play and Michel Luan wasted another opportunity when he looped his strike over the bar from inside the area.

Xavier Pentecote came even closer to scoring after 23 minutes with a header from Ricardo Machado's cross which dropped just past the left-hand post.

Toulouse goalkeeper Yohann Pele was merely a spectator for the opening 32 minutes, but his first save proved significant as he turned away Jadson's first-time strike from a Darijo Srna cross.

And Shakhtar should have been ahead at the break but striker Luiz Adriano clattered the crossbar with his left-footed drive in the last action of the half.

The Ukrainian side wasted a good opportunity within seconds of the restart as Luiz Adriano failed to get make the most of a cross from Willian and poked the ball wide.

But the Brazilian atoned for the error five minutes later when he latched onto a pass from Jadson before turning in the box and firing into the bottom left corner.

A second goal followed after 63 minutes from Gai, who was left unmarked to side-foot home Willian's pass from just inside the area.

Toulouse had not yet given up hope and visiting keeper Andrei Pyatov did well to tip Pentecote's 12-yard strike round the post as the clock ticked down.

But further efforts from Luan and Etienne Didot were also stopped by Pyatov as Shakhtar claimed another three points.
