Moldovan champions FC Sheriff upset the form guide to beat high-flying Dutch side FC Twente 2-0 with a goal in each half of their Europa League Group H match.

Wilfreid Benjamin Balima netted four minutes before the half-time whistle before a Franca Jymmy effort deep in injury-time settled a match in which Steve McClaren's side showed none of the pedigree which has seen them to the top of the Eredivisie standings.

The sides are now level in the group on four points after three games.

Alexander Erokhin had the first serious attempt on goal 12 minutes into proceedings, but his powerful 25-yard effort was charged down by the alert Douglas Franco.

Sheriff continued to press their opponents, who had been fancied to dominate, Balima drilling over the crossbar from outside the area.

Luis Antonio Rodriguez then teed up a scoring chance from a 13th-minute corner, finding Andrei Corneencov in the centre of the penalty area.

His attempt was heading goalward but Twente keeper Sander Boschker was able to turn it round the post.

A David Carney foul gave Balima a chance to try his luck from a free-kick but his delivery was poor.

It took the visitors half an hour to register their first attempt but it was a good one, Miroslav Stoch forcing a fine save out of Stanislav Namasco from the edge of the box before Blaise Nkufo warmed his hands for the second time two minutes later.

The, with 41 minutes down, Rodriguez fashioned the breakthrough, hanging up a cross for Balima to head into the bottom corner.

Bernard Parker and Cheik Tiote were both sent on after 58 minutes as Steve McClaren attempted to turn the tide.

It did not work immediately, with the second half now descending into a series of uninspired attacks.

Neither goalkeeper found themselves worked too hard in this period, with the majority of play taking place away from the danger areas.

Theo Janssen worked hard to get Twente back into it but was unable to effect a change on the lacklustre proceedings.

Nkufo lifted things with a smart shot in the 72nd minute, Namasco pulling off a fine save to keep it at 1-0.

Rodriguez and Corneencov returned fire for Sheriff and Boschker matched his opposite number with two athletic stops.

Jymmy then broke in the fourth minute of added time, slotting home to double the lead.
