Manchester City manager Mark Hughes insists he feels no extra pressure as the expected £210million takeover of the club nears a conclusion.

Hughes claims all top-flight bosses are under scrutiny, no matter the extent of their spending power.

City are expected to finalise a deal with the Abu Dhabi United group, backed by Sheikh Mansour, by the end of the week.

The Middle East company have already stated their ambition by sanctioning the £32.5million signing of Robinho from Real Madrid.

In addition Shaun-Wright Phillips, Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta have been recruited and the four newcomers are all eligible to face AC Omonia in the first leg of the UEFA Cup tonight.

City are now seen to be the team to beat in the competition but Hughes is relaxed about the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

He said: "The pressure that comes with being a Premier League manager is always there, irrespective of the resources you have.

"You are expected to win and show progress. So that is what I have to do at City.

"We are hopeful of a very successful season. The target is ideally to progress in all competitions we are involved in.

"We want to make an impression in the UEFA Cup as we feel European football will help us develop as a team. It is a big part of what we want to do.

"If we can get through this round we are into the group stages and means a number games which will be good for us."

Omonia caused a shock by putting out AEK Athens in the last round and Hughes expects a tough test in front of a partisan crowd.

He said: "It is going to be a difficult game. They are a good side as their last result in the competition indicates.

"There is a lot of confidence in Cypriot football at the moment. It is in a very healthy state and we are mindful of that."

Midfielder Michael Johnson, who has signed a new five-year deal, is expected to have a late fitness test as he is troubled by a groin injury.

Martin Petrov has been ruled out because of a similar problem but Hughes believes the Bulgarian will recover in a week to 10 days.

It means the pacy wide man will miss the match against Portsmouth on Sunday and possibly the Carling Cup game at Brighton next Wednesday.

Hughes said: "Martin was very close to being involved but then felt some tightness in his hamstring.

"We had it checked and the thinking is he will be out for a week to 10 days.

"We hope that is the case because Martin gives us another threat. Ideally we would have liked his talents but that is not the case. We hope to have him back sooner rather than later."
