Lyon defender Cris has told his side they must move on quickly from their 2-0 defeat to Sochaux with a crucial Champions League tie away to Liverpool looming in midweek.

Les Gones suffered their first defeat in any competition this season to their mid-table opponents at the Stade Gerland after goals from Jacques Faty and Sloan Privat.

The defeat meant Lyon's lead at the top of Ligue 1 was cut to goal difference only after surprise package Montpellier continued their stunning return to the top flight with a 2-1 win over St Etienne.

There is little time, however, for Lyon to reflect on the defeat with arguably their toughest match of the season, away to Liverpool in the Champions League, awaiting them on Tuesday night.

Lyon have won their opening two European matches and victory at Anfield would already put them on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages.

"We didn't play well. It's hard to accept this defeat at home. But we cannot win every match and play spectacular football every week," Cris said.

"We have to pick ourselves up because there's still a long way to go in the championship.

"There are some big games still to be played. We'll keep working hard.

"We haven't got time to dwell on this because we have another big match on Tuesday."

Sochaux's win came at the end of a difficult week for the club after their striker Charlie Davies suffered life-threatening injuries in a car crash while away on national team duty with United States.

Davies was hospitalised after the crash, which tragically left a female passenger dead.

Sochaux had lost six of their previous eight games and boss Francis Gillot said his side had been galvanised by the tragic circumstances.

"We have a lot of emotions during the week following the incident Charlie Davies was involved in," Gillot said.

"We were very shocked. This situation brought us closer together and bound the morale in the team.

"We have seen that we have responded to the situation. I hope that next in the future we can act rather than react and do things right from the beginning as we managed to do for these 90 minutes."
