Football Association chiefs will discover in October if their bid for Wembley to host the 2008 Champions League final has been successful.

The new - and still incomplete - national stadium will face competition from eight other venues to land European football's showpiece event.

Yesterday the unfinished stadium was evacuated and construction workers sent home after an incident involving the roof of the arena.

"There will be an examination of all sites from April to June and then the final decision is foreseen to be taken at the executive committee meeting of UEFA in October," a UEFA spokesman told the PA Sport Services Football Insider bulletin.

Earlier this month, the FA announced this season's FA Cup final would be played at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium after construction company Multiplex could not guarantee that the £757million 90,000-seat stadium would be ready for May 13.

Wembley will face stiff competition for the 2008 final, with Germany, Italy and Portugal lodging two bids apiece, and grounds in Russia and Spain completing the list of competitors.

All of the nominated venues will now be assessed by UEFA before a final decision on who will host the two finals is made in October.

The Allianz Arena in Munich and Olympic Stadium in Berlin, two key venues for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, have been put forward by Germany, while the Italian Football Federation has nominated Rome's Olympic Stadium and Milan's Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, more commonly known as the San Siro.

Milan last hosted the Champions League final in 2001 while a decade has passed since the event was last played in the Eternal City.

Porto's Dragao Stadium and Lisbon's Stadium of Light represent Portugal, while Moscow has put forward its 84,000 capacity Luzhniki Olympic Stadium and Spain has named Seville's Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium as their candidate.

The deadline for potential candidates was on Friday, and along with those in the running for the Champions League final, six venues have put their names forward to host the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

English stadia lead the way with the City of Manchester Stadium and Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium set to fight it out for the right to host the final.

Joining the duo is Hamburg's AOL Arena, the Ramat-Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv, Israel, Real Murcia's Nueva Condomina ground and Fenerbahce's stadium in Istanbul.
