Sven-Goran Eriksson was treated to a passionate London derby for the fifth
instalment of his guide to Premiership football.
The England coach, who arrived 10 days ago, witnessed the likes of Joe Cole,
Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard press their international claims.
West Ham's midfield trio did their personal cases a power of good with
impressive performances but it was another former Lazio man that stole the
show.
Paolo di Canio's right boot produced the one moment of real quality at The
Valley to provide a point for the Hammers 16 minutes from time.
Shaun Bartlett had opened the scoring as early as the seventh minute for a
Charlton side battered throughout and bruised from their last meeting with the
visitors.
The Addicks, having previously defeated Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs in local
derbies at The Valley this season, were looking to avenge a 5-0 thrashing by the
Hammers on Boxing Day.
West Ham manager Harry Redknapp handed debuts to £1.75million signing from
Blackburn Christian Dailly and Sebastian Schemmel, the wing-back on loan from
Metz.
Hannu Tihinen and Rigobert Song, two Hammers additions since the £18million
sale of Rio Ferdinand to Leeds, were alongside the Scottish international in a
back three.
Frederic Kanoute, who earlier in the day refuted claims he wished to leave the
east London club, partnered captain di Canio up front.
Alan Curbishley was left to bemoan his side's lack of bite in the opening
exchanges at Upton Park and, in stark contrast, Charlton players snapped into
every challenge from the first whistle.
Scott Parker took a stray boot from Carrick in the face for his trouble in one
blood and thunder challenge.
Cole, once again under the scrutiny of Eriksson - the Swede took in the 2-0
defeat to Sunderland last week - made an early impression with a cross shot that
zipped across Dean Kiely's goalmouth.
But it was the rampant Addicks' early endeavours that reaped reward with the
opener shortly afterwards through a cool finish from Bartlett.
Paul Konchesky burst through midfield to slip the South African into the box
and Bartlett beat Craig Forrest from 15 yards for his third goal since arriving
on a long-term loan from Swiss side FC Zurich.
Schemmel and Parker exchanged long-range efforts and Cole forced Kiely to
scramble to his right before di Canio charged down a clearance from the keeper
that flew just wide.
Nigel Winterburn lifted a rare right-footed effort over the bar from distance
as West Ham continued to press.
A clever shot on the turn by Carrick was closer to finding the net, though, as
the young midfielder flashed the ball past Kiely but the wrong side of an
upright.
Cole then fashioned a chance for Kanoute but the Frenchman powered his
close-range header wide.
The visitors were dominant before the interval and a quickly taken free-kick
involving Winterburn and Lampard sliced open the Charlton defence for di Canio
to burst into the area only to drag his shot when one-on-one with Kiely.
Claus Jensen forced Forrest into a rare stop on the stroke of half-time with
the keeper parrying a 20-yard curler.
Charlton began the second period as they had the first, with gusto, but the
skills of di Canio and Kanoute, checked for the most part by the outstanding
Richard Rufus, threatened to forge an equaliser.
Kanoute stumbled in the area after waltzing past two defenders and di Canio's
arrowed cross, following a delightful Cole pass, was hacked clear by Parker.
Cole was also coming into his own and the precocious playmaker was only kept
off the scoresheet by a goal-line block from Andy Todd.
Kanoute sent Schemmel racing to the by-line and the wing-back's pull-back was
met by Cole only for his sidefooted attempt to thud into the sprawling Todd's
chest.
The frustration threatened to boil over as Winterburn tussled with Matt
Svensson in an off-the-ball incident.
Kiely stood up to save Lampard's half-volley on the run following di Canio's
clever flick.
And Forrest reacted quickly at the other end to clutch a deflected Graham
Stuart volley beneath his cross bar.
Di Canio's night worsened with a 71st-minute booking, shortly after appearing
to be bundled over by Rufus.
But his mood was soon to improve with a wondrous 74th-minute leveller.
The Italian danced his way across the edge of the area and threaded his shot
into the top right-hand corner.
A point apiece leaves neither side closer to the destiny of their seasons with
both encamped in mid-table.
