A clever shot on the turn by Carrick was closer to finding the net, though, as the young midfielder flashed the ball past Kiely but the wrong side of an upright.

Cole then fashioned a chance for Kanoute but the Frenchman powered his close-range header wide.

The visitors were dominant before the interval and a quickly taken free-kick involving Winterburn and Lampard sliced open the Charlton defence for di Canio to burst into the area only to drag his shot when one-on-one with Kiely.

Claus Jensen forced Forrest into a rare stop on the stroke of half-time with the keeper parrying a 20-yard curler.

Charlton began the second period as they had the first, with gusto, but the skills of di Canio and Kanoute, checked for the most part by the outstanding Richard Rufus, threatened to forge an equaliser.

Kanoute stumbled in the area after waltzing past two defenders and di Canio's arrowed cross, following a delightful Cole pass, was hacked clear by Parker.

Cole was also coming into his own and the precocious playmaker was only kept off the scoresheet by a goal-line block from Andy Todd.

Kanoute sent Schemmel racing to the by-line and the wing-back's pull-back was met by Cole only for his sidefooted attempt to thud into the sprawling Todd's chest.

The frustration threatened to boil over as Winterburn tussled with Matt Svensson in an off-the-ball incident.

Kiely stood up to save Lampard's half-volley on the run following di Canio's clever flick.

And Forrest reacted quickly at the other end to clutch a deflected Graham Stuart volley beneath his cross bar.

Di Canio's night worsened with a 71st-minute booking, shortly after appearing to be bundled over by Rufus.

But his mood was soon to improve with a wondrous 74th-minute leveller.

The Italian danced his way across the edge of the area and threaded his shot into the top right-hand corner.

A point apiece leaves neither side closer to the destiny of their seasons with both encamped in mid-table.
