A crazy three-minute spell in the first half undermined West Brom and
condemned them to defeat in their final Division One assignment of the season at
Prenton Park.
Jason Van Blerk handed Rovers the lead in the 17th minute when he turned a Lee
Jones centre into his own net off the underside of the bar.
Then in the 19th minute Paul Mardon floored David Kelly inside the box and
home captain Kenny Irons netted from the penalty spot.
It was not until the 75th minute that Albion pulled a goal back through
substitute Fabian DeFreitas after he dispossessed Alan Morgan.
But Tranmere were far better on the day, and Kelly restored their two-goal
lead when turning in a Scott Taylor cross four minutes from time.
Clint Hill, who was impressive in central defence for Tranmere, hit the bar
early on - and Albion goalkeeper Phil Whitehead made two useful saves.
Lee Hughes had few chances for Albion as he tried to add to his 32-goal tally
but he should have scored in the 45th minute.
He was out on his own but saw his
low shot blocked by goalkeeper John Achterberg.
Tranmere's Graham Allen and George Santos and the Albion duo of Enzo Maresca
and Hughes collected yellow cards.
