Bolton stayed on course for the Premiership and stretched their unbeaten run
to 14 league games on an afternoon when two strikers scored against their former
club.
Fabian De Freitas, once of Bolton, gave West Brom a shock lead only to see it
cancelled out by ex-Albion scoring star Bob Taylor.
But it was left to a defender to settle matters, Neil Cox's second goal in
successive home games giving Colin Todd's men the points early in the second
half.
Albion could feel somewhat hard done by for they seemed to score a perfectly
good equaliser shortly after Cox had put Bolton ahead.
Leading scorer Lee Hughes turned away to celebrate a goal at the near post
from a corner but the referee decided the ball had not crossed the line.
Albion were also upset when Kevin Kilbane had a late penalty claim turned
down.
But the visitors could have few complaints as Bolton created 20 attempts at
goal to underline their quality.
Wanderers should have been well ahead by the time De Freitas stunned the
Reebok Stadium crowd with his fourth goal of the season on 27 minutes.
Scott Sellars lost possession in midfield and De Freitas burst forward to hit
a right-foot shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen and in off the foot of a post.
Hughes was immediately denied by a marvellous save from Jaaskelainen and
Albion survived when Taylor's 'goal' was ruled offside.
But Taylor was not to be disappointed for long and two minutes from the
interval he rose at the far post to volley home a glorious cross from man-of-the
match Michael Johansen.
Bolton settled matters through Cox on 51 minutes, the full-back getting in
unmarked to finish off a four-man move in which Sellars provided the telling
pass.
Great goalkeeping from Jaaskelainen kept out James Quinn at full stretch
before the moment of controversy.
There seemed little doubt that Hughes' shot had gone a good yard over the line
and it was no surprise that West Brom protested strongly when a goal was not
awarded.
A clumsy challenge by Jaaskelainen also had Albion seething when Kilbane went
sprawling and no penalty was given.
But Bolton rallied and Taylor forced a great save from the impressive Phil
Whitehead, who also managed to get his body in the way of a goalbound shot from
Cox.
In the final minutes Bolton substitute Ricardo Gardner was denied by Whitehead
while Albion lost the services of skipper Matt Carbon, stretchered off with a
nasty leg injury.
