West Brom hot shot Lee Hughes grabbed his 28th goal of the season to shatter
Alan Buckley's dreams of recording a double over the club who sacked him two
years ago.
Grimsby, who last won at The Hawthorns in 1931, had to settle in the end for a
share of the spoils as Albion dented their determined First Division promotion
push.
It was Town who dominated the opening 45 minutes and they deservedly took the
lead when former Nottingham Forest midfielder Kingsley Black hit the target in
the 28th minute.
David Smith, one of four former Albion players in the Town line-up, slipped a
perfect pass to striker Lee Nogan. He laid the ball back to Black, who made no
mistake with a shot that appeared to take a slight deflection.
But the scoreline was levelled in the 74th minute when Hughes, who had earlier
done little to threaten the Grimsby defence, grabbed yet another strike in his
memorable season.
A cross from substitute Mark Angel was pushed out by diving goalkeeper Aidan
Davison. The ball flew straight into the path of the unmarked Hughes and he had
the simple task of prodding home from close range to snatch an equaliser.
Town have now banked an impressive 19 points from a possible 24, with Albion
stretching their unbeaten league run to six games.
In the first half Town should have found the target in the 26th minute when
Kevin Donovan opened up the Albion defence with a superb cross to Black, who
powered his header wide when it looked easier to score.
Then after the break Town were unlucky again when keeper Phil Whitehead could
only punch away a cross from John McDermott.
The ball flew to Stacy Coldicott, who quickly nodded in a looping header only
for the ball to be cleared off the line by defender Paul Holmes.
