WEST BROM REPORTS 1998-1999

Watford 0 West Bromwich Albion 2

West Bromwich Albion extended their unbeaten run to five games and their unbeaten run away from home to five games as they toppled promotion-chasing Watford and moved closer to a play-off place themselves.

Albion were gifted an early goal at Vicarage Road, defended well but led a charmed life at times before creating the better second-half chances and wrapping up victory in injury time.

Albion were sorely tested by former Wolves and Aston Villa winger Tony Daley who started for only the second time during his trial spell at Watford.

He created havoc down the right in the first half, but Albion went in at the interval a goal to the good.

A challenge on Fabian Defreitas saw the ball ricochet back into the path of the unchallenged Richard Sneekes, and he powered in a long-angled shot.

Watford should have been on terms but Phil Whitehead, Albion's man of the match, pulled off a fine save to deny Allan Smart after 15 minutes.

Whitehead was there again to save from Micah Hyde who then sent another chance over the bar.

Watford looked certain to equalise as half-time approached only for Whitehead to deflect Daley's goal-bound shot wide for a corner.

Early in the second half, Albion had a chance to put themselves firmly in the driving seat when a mistake by Darren Bazeley set up Kevin Kilbane, but Alec Chamberlain made a superb save.

The second half was scrappier, and it was not until late in the game that Watford had a couple of chances.

Substitutes Ronny Rosenthal and Tommy Mooney had chances but failed to stretch the 'keeper, and Smart could have levelled when set up by Rosenthal but shot tamely to Whitehead.

But with seconds running out Albion substitute Mark Angel cut inside, dummied past a defender and drove beyond the reach of Chamberlain.
