WEST BROM REPORTS 1997-1998

Charlton 5 West Bromwich 0

Charlton moved third from top in the First Division with a spectacular demolition of West Brom at The Valley.

It was the Londoners' biggest margin of victory this season and their third win in the space of seven days.

In a poor fist half, with each defence looking fragile, both goalkeepers saw plenty of action.

Charlton had two escapes in the opening minutes. Bob Taylor won the ball off Sasa Ilic in the ninth minute but stumbled before he could get his shot in.

A minute later Ilic made a save at the feet of Jimmy Quinn.

Kevin Kilbane headed wide from a good position and Ilic twice came to Charlton's rescue, blocking a Peter Butler shot before diving at Ian Hamilton's feet.

Alan Miller, in the opposite goal, dealt well with a fierce Clive Mendonca shot in the 25th minute. But when he could only parry a John Robinson attempt five minutes later, Mendonca's follow-up shot wasted high and wide.

Miller was finally beaten in the 44th minute when Sean Newton sent over a perfect cross for Mark Bright at the far post to angle his header home - a carbon copy of Saturday's winning goal on Saturday.

Substitute Sean Flynn robbed Mark Bowen to go close in the 51st minute but Charlton increased their lead a minute with a fine goal from Newton who bulleted the goal home from 20 yards after being sent clear by Keith Jones.

Bob Taylor headed another chance wide in the 61st minute and this was to signal a spectacular finish from Charlton with three goals in nine minutes to finally kill off the Baggies.

After 70 minutes, Miller was judged to have brought down Mendonca and the leading Charlton scorer slotted home his 17th of the season from the spot.

Three minutes later Mark Kinsella scored with a fine shot from 18 yards after being set up by Mendonca and Jones.

The scoring was completed in the 79th minute when Mendonca blasted the ball home after Miller had pushed the ball out.
