West Brom were left feeling aggrieved by a disallowed Ian Hamilton goal
against Tranmere at Prenton Park tonight.
Hamilton had a first-half effort ruled out for offside after latching onto an
Andy Hunt pass but TV replays showed he was clearly a yard onside.
Tranmere also had an amazing escape two minutes before the break when Peter
Butler, Andy Hunt and Shaun Murphy had shots blocked during a frantic goalmouth
melee.
Albion, who stay in seventh place in the First Division and are still without
a win under new boss Denis Smith, were then denied on the stroke of half-time
when Lee Hughes' effort was superbly blocked by Steve Simonson.
But Tranmere, who have now gone seven games without a win, seized the
initiative after the break.
Player-manager John Aldridge missed a sitter in the 52nd minute when set up by
Liam O'Brien.
And although Andy Hunt struck the outside of the post for Albion in the 65th
minute Tranmere finished strongly.
Substitute Andy Parkinson blazed over from close range after four minutes from
time and David Kelly also missed the target at the death.
Tranmere's Kenny Irons was booked inside the first minute for a foul but John
McGreal was in outstanding form for the Merseysiders while Murphy, Butler and
Richard Sneekes shone for Albion.
