Striker Roman Bednar scored deep into injury time to boost West Brom's promotion hopes and add to Coca Cola Championship basement side Colchester's misery.

The Us took a shock lead through Chris Coyne's overhead kick and quickly doubled their advantage when Medy Elito fired home.

West Brom hit back with quick-fire efforts of their own from from leading scorer Kevin Phillips and Chris Brunt.

But the visitors restored their lead against the run of the play through Kevin Lisbie, putting them on course to record a first win in 10.

James Morrison had different ideas and pulled the Baggies level in the first minute of injury time before Bednar secured the dramatic victory.

Lisbie, who overcame a knock which forced him off at Carrow Road, had the first chance for the visitors but he failed to keep his head down from inside the area.

The Us took the lead in the 14th minute when Coyne fired home in spectacular fashion from inside the area.

The basement side then doubled their lead just three minutes later when midfielder Elito found the net from 18-yards.

Phillips nearly reduced the deficit shortly after as he struck a long-range effort against the post and the Us leading scorer Lisbie was then denied by Baggies goalkeeper Dean Kiely before the hosts reduced the deficit.

Paul Robinson set up Phillips to slot home his 20th goal of the season from inside the area in the 36th minute.

The hosts grabbed an equaliser with just six minutes remaining of the first half when Brunt found the bottom left corner of the goal from outside of the area.

West Brom looked to carry the momentum into the second half with Jonathan Greening finding substitute Neil Clement with his corner, but the defender fired wide.

Greening's corners continued to cause problems as he set up Robinson to head wide before Bednar was denied by Us stopper Dean Gerken.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure as Brunt shot over the bar from inside the area before Zoltan Gera fired over.

But the visitors held their ground with Coyne blocking Robert Koren's effort and then restored their lead in the 76th minute.

Lisbie pounced to slot home after Kiely had spilled substitute Kemal Izzet's shot.

Colchester substitute Scott Vernon then shot wide before Phillips headed over from close range with less than 10 minutes remaining.

But in the first minute of injury time substitute Morrison found the net from the edge of the area.

The Baggies then dramatically stole all three points in the third minute of injury time when Robinson set up Bednar to slot home from inside the area.
