West Brom celebrated promotion back to the Premiership with a 2-0 victory over relegated Bradford courtesy of second-half strikes from Geoff Horsfield and Lee Hughes.

Sunderland's goalless draw at Wigan during their lunchtime clash ensured that it will be Albion who join Norwich in the top flight next season after a one-year absence.

As the final whistle went at the JJB Stadium, Gary Megson's squad celebrated joyously on the pitch in front of their jubilant fans as a huge party atmosphere engulfed The Hawthorns.

Megson had barely been able to bring himself to watch proceedings at the JJB Stadium and, as his side began against the doomed visitors, they found themselves frustrated by a stubborn defensive display from Bryan Robson's men.

However, a win was vital for Albion in order to keep the pressure on leaders Norwich and Thomas Gaardsoe's 14th-minute header almost handed them the lead, only for Bantams keeper Mark Paston to turn his effort around the post.

Baggies keeper Russell Hoult then did likewise to prevent Lewis Emanuel's right-footed effort from the edge of the box opening the scoring for the visitors.

Predictably, the Baggies began to gain the upper hand with Hughes and Horsfield heading the home side's attack.

For the time being, however, the experienced duo of David Wetherall and Peter Atherton at the heart of Bradford's defence thwarted the home side's first-half attacking efforts.

Albion lacked any real pace up front, which could prove their undoing next season, but they possess perhaps the finest player outside of the Premiership in Jason Koumas.

The former Tranmere midfielder has the guile and skill to unlock the best of defences and it was his superb chipped effort in the 55th minute which led to the home side's opener.

Koumas' fine effort came bouncing back off the bar, where Horsfield was on hand to nod the ball home from just six yards out.

The Hawthorns erupted and as the home side continued to press, it came as no surprise when they scored again on the hour mark.

Boyhood Albion supporter Hughes drilled a right-footed effort in from the right-hand side of penalty area to secure the points and celebrated with his fellow fans.

Bradford then replaced Atherton and Dean Windass with Kevin Sanasy and Mark Bower but it was the home side who continued to press.

Indeed, Hughes was unlucky not to register his second goal when his fine effort from the edge of the box hit the woodwork.
