Grimsby made it four league and cup games unbeaten under new boss Paul Groves
as they held high-flying West Brom at Blundell Park.
The Mariners had the better of the chances and Russell Hoult saved well from a
Chris Thompson header while Ben Chapman had an effort headed off the line by
Phil Gilchrist.
West Brom's best chance fell to Danny Dichio after great work by Jason Roberts
but Simon Ford blocked his effort on the line.
Grimsby were unlucky not to take the lead after creating a series of first
half chances.
The Baggies Andy Johnson then volleyed wide before Darren Moore headed onto
the roof of the net from a Derek McInnes free-kick.
Grimsby should have gone ahead in the 20th minute when Hoult dropped a Danny
Butterfield cross under challenge from Stuart Campbell. The loose ball fell to
Chapman and his first-time effort beat Hoult but was headed over his own bar by
Gilchrist.
Grimsby had another great chance when Thompson got his head to a Wayne Burnett
cross but was denied by a brilliant save from Hoult.
West Brom boss Gary Megson sent on leading scorer Scott Dobie 10 minutes into
the second half and went 4-3-3 in a bid to win the game.
Roberts looked like breaking clear but was denied by a great tackle from
Butterfield.
Grimsby sent on striker Michael Boulding for Campbell but it seemed as the
half progressed that both sides were prepared to settle for a point.
