WEST BROM REPORTS 2001-2002
Picture Dichio - netted a brace for the Baggies. (Allsport)

West Brom 4 Stockport 0

Gary Megson's high-flying West Brom ran rings round struggling Stockport as they scored more than one goal in a game for the first time in over two months.

Albion were always in control at The Hawthorns with striker Danny Dichio grabbing a brace and Jason Roberts and Andy Johnson also getting on the scoresheet.

County were never in the game as they crashed to a club record ninth successive defeat and, on this disappointing display, they look resigned to relegation.

The Baggies opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Roberts - making only his third start of the season - claimed his first goal of the campaign.

The £2million striker picked up a pass from Dichio before dribbling his way round County reserve keeper Sam Turner and slotting the ball into the empty net.

Johnson increased their lead 11 minutes later when he popped up for his second goal in four days.

Neil Clement chipped a right-wing corner into the middle where Johnson rose superbly to power a terrific header past the helpless Turner.

Dichio ended his seven-match goal drought in the 72nd minute when he grabbed his first goal since completing his permanent £1.25million move to The Hawthorns.

Slovakian international Igor Balis crossed from the right and Dichio made no mistake with a marvellous rising shot past the helpless Turner.

Then, just six minutes later, the dangerous Dichio was on the mark again with a shot at the far post to another pin-point cross from the hard-working Balis.

County did nothing to trouble Albion keeper Russell Hoult and he did not have to make a single save in the whole 90 minutes.

It was an unhappy return to West Brom for County boss Carlton Palmer, who began his career with the club.

But it was an occasion to celebrate for opposite number Megson as he clocked up a convincing victory over his former club.
