Striker Martin Smith grabbed his fourth goal in four games to secure all three
points for play-off chasing Huddersfield at The Hawthorns.
Smith's vital 22nd-minute strike earned Town only their third success in 14
games and left hard-working Albion facing a fight to avoid the drop.
The only goal of the game came after Clyde Wijnhard sent Smith breaking away
with a perfect pass and the striker made no mistake with a low angled drive into
the far corner of the net.
Albion were hoping to build on their two successive victories and to mark new
manager Gary Megson's first home game in charge with a win.
But while they continually posed problems for the harassed Town defence, in
the end they had no reward.
Dutch midfielder Richard Sneekes twice came close inside the first eight
minutes with shots that flew wide. Then in the 26th minute striker Lee Hughes
had a shot well beaten down by Town keeper Nico Vaesen.
After the break it was again Megson's men who held the reins and in the 51st
minute Hughes was denied again by the agility of Vaesen.
Then, in the 55th minute, Albion came desperately close to stealing what would
have been a deserved share of the spoils.
The enterprising Hughes chipped in a perfect pass to strike partner Mickey
Evans and his first-time shot rattled the Huddersfield woodwork.
