WEST BROM REPORTS 1999-2000

West Brom 2 Tranmere Rovers 0

Mangerless West Brom waisted no time in getting over the sacking of Brian Little with a 2-0 win over Tranmere at the Hawthorns.

Goals from skipper Sean Flynn and Lee Hughes gave Albion only their second victory in 19 games to climb out of the bottom three.

The Baggies, who hope to start interviewing candidates for the manager's job tomorrow, took the lead five minutes before the break.

Aussie defender Jason van Blerk made a great run down the left before chipping a superb cross into the heart of the Rovers defence. Mickey Evans' shot was stopped by Murphy, but the keeper failed to hang onto the ball and Flynn slid the ball into the net from close range.

Hughes - back from a one-match ban - then made the points safe when netted his 13th goal of the season on 50 minutes, pouncing onto a fantastic long pass from James Quinn.

The ginger-haired hitman held off a challenge from defender Gareth Roberts before blasting a hard-angled shot past the helpless Joe Murphy and into the far corner.

In the end Albion were well worth their success, but had a lucky escape after only six minutes when Tranmere striker David Kelly squandered a marvellous scoring opportunity.

Wayne Allison nodded the ball on for Kelly who had only Brian Jensen - making his debut in goal for Albion - to beat but he drilled his shot wide when it looked easier to score.

Jensen, who took over in the Albion goal mouth from Chris Adamson, had a terrific game and he made two cracking saves to keep out goal-bound shots in the second half from Kelly and Dave Challinor.
