Watford 1 Sheff Wed 0

By Ken Gaunt, PA Sport

Sheffield Wednesday look to be heading for the Nationwide League just seven days after their manager Danny Wilson said they would go through the rest of the season unbeaten.

Allan Smart clinched victory for Watford with a dramatic winner two minutes from time.

Smart swept home a cross from sub Tommy Smith to give them only their fifth win in the Premiership this season.

This rare success is unlikely to stop them returning to the First Division but they could be joined by Wednesday, who again lacked punch up front.

Richard Cresswell had the best chance of the game in the 50th minute, only to find the side netting.

Wednesday were forced to bring on keeper Kevin Pressman as Pavel Srnicek was injured after only seven minutes.

He appeared to damage his shoulder, only to soldier on before realising he was in too much distress.

Watford were able to field Nordin Wooter as the Dutch midfielder had recovered from an ankle injury.

Wooter almost put Watford ahead when he cut inside and fired in a shot that was spilled by Srnicek. The keeper was hurt as he tussled for the ball with Heidar Helguson.

Pressman, who had been troubled himself by a groin injury, played impressively and bravely and could not be faulted for the defeat.

But this was a drab encounter and showed why both sides have been struggling in the top flight this season.

Watford should have taken the lead after 28 minutes when Smart and Micah Hyde played a neat one-two. Hyde found himself in a good position only to send his shot into the crowd.

Wednesday retaliated and Watford's Paul Robinson cleared off the line from Cresswell after Andy Hinchcliffe had delivered the cross.

Cresswell was looking lively for Wednesday and made space to get on the end of a pass from Wim Jonk.

Watford keeper Alex Chamberlain tried to narrow the angle but Cresswell took his time only to send his shot into the side netting.

Pressman then did well to save at the feet of Helguson following a cross from Neil Cox.

Watford had a let-off when Robinson scrambled the ball away after Alan Quinn delivered the cross from the left.

Pressman then did superbly well to tip away a shot from Smart but the Watford striker had the last word to give them a rare win bonus.
