Dele Adebola scored one goal and made the other as Bristol City maintained their Coca-Cola Championship promotion push despite a last-gasp goal for the visitors from Lee Bullen.
City could not have wished for a better start after Michael McIndoe found Adebola and the striker kept his cool to fire home a left-footed shot from 18 yards.
The home side continued to push and had another effort on goal two minutes later but Lee Johnson's long-range effort was comfortably saved Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Wednesday carved out an opportunity of their own after 10 minutes but Deon Burton's shot was held by City keeper Adriano Basso.
But Gary Johnson's side continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges and Grant was again tested when Nick Carle tried his luck from 20 yards.
City enjoyed the better of the play and Wednesday found chances were at a premium with the home defence holding firm.
Owls midfielder Burton O'Brien tried his luck with a 30-yard free-kick just before the half-hour mark but his effort sailed wide of the target.
Moments later Wade Small fired a 25-yard shot wide as City continued to frustrate Wednesday.
City continued to push forward in search of a second goal before the break but Grant was equal to Marvin Elliott's 25-yard shot.
They were almost rewarded in the 41st minute when Carle struck a powerful shot only for Grant to tip the ball around the post.
Wednesday then spurned a great chance to level matters two minutes later as Small mis-hit a shot from inside the six-yard box.
The visitors made a tactical switch at the start of the second half with O'Brien replaced by Sean McAllister but it was City who continued to enjoy the upper hand in terms of possession.
Wednesday's policy of shooting from distance was proving unsuccessful with Marcus Tudgay's 20-yarder after 54 minutes failing to hit the target.
But they were almost on level terms a minute later when McAllister saw his close-range header tipped over by Basso.
Basso's save proved crucial as City then doubled their advantage moments later, Bradley Orr firing home after latching onto a pass from Adebola.
That proved to be Adebola's last telling contribution as he was then replaced by Darren Byfield just short of the hour mark.
Wednesday continued to threaten only sporadically with Basso comfortably saving from Adam Bolder after 74 minutes.
Indeed, it was City who could easily have stretched their lead with Byfield's 25-yard piledriver 12 minutes from time bringing the best out of Grant and the Wednesday goalkeeper then having to tip McIndoe's shot around the post shortly afterwards.
Wednesday halved the deficit in injury time when Bullen fired home but it was too little, too late.
