Relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday ended their long wait for a goal and
also ended a nine-match winless run at Turf Moor.
Chris Eagles finished a 634-minute spell without a goal in the early stages
and Graham Coughlan added a second after half-time.
Garreth O'Connor scored with a penalty he earned himself in the closing stages
but for all their pressure Burnley could not produce an equaliser.
It was scrappy but Wednesday started in positive fashion with Chris Brunt
causing the Clarets defence an early scare.
And it took just four minutes for an Owls player to find the net and end their
miserable record in front of goal.
Following a brief spell of pressure on their defence, Burnley failed to clear
and John Hills' low cross from the left was allowed to trickle across the box
where Eagles was poised to slip the ball home.
The visitors were playing with plenty of confidence and an Eagles corner was
flicked just wide by Barry Corr.
Burnley's first real threat came when Wade Elliott found space on the right
but Graham Branch headed wide after he had been picked out at the far post.
Brunt had threatened with a couple of low strikes and Wednesday went even
closer to doubling their advantage when an Eagles cross looped up off the
covering Jon Harley and came back off the inside of the far post.
The Clarets slowly played their way into the game but all too often their
delivery was poor.
In the 34th minute, Burton O'Brien jinked inside Mike Duff and his thumping
effort was pushed away by Brian Jensen.
Garreth O'Connor replaced Branch at the break and his corner was met well by
Gifton Noel-Williams but cleared off the line by Hills.
The visitors were forced deeper but were never too troubled by Burnley
attacks, although Noel-Williams failed to make a decent contact when the ball
fell to him in a goalmouth scramble.
But Paul Sturrock's men finally doubled their lead when Coughlan rose totally
unmarked to nod home a Brunt corner.
Burnley were short on ideas and even with the Owls pressed deep into their
area, they struggled to threaten Weaver's goal.
Micah Hyde had a shot blocked by Richard Wood and James O'Connor's low effort
flew wide but all too often their shorter attacks foundered in the bog and mass
of bodies in the Wednesday 18-yard box.
As they continued to press, Duff's cross came off Noel-Williams' heel but was
cleared by Glenn Whelan, while Corr hooked well off target and Brunt was
thwarted by Jensen in rare pieces of action at the other end.
With eight minutes remaining, Garreth O'Connor rounded Weaver only to be
hauled down by the on-loan Manchester City stopper.
Weaver got a hand to the resulting spot-kick but it crawled under his body to
set up a tense finish.
