Michael Reddy gatecrashed Portsmouth's promotion party to earn a shock last-gasp victory for relegation-haunted Sheffield Wednesday.

In this meeting of Division One's top and bottom clubs, Pompey only needed what looked on paper a straightforward victory to secure top-flight football for next season.

And when Lee Bradbury - making his first Portsmouth appearance since December 2001 against the side for whom he scored three goals on loan recently - put the hosts ahead after 19 minutes it sparked celebrations among the Fratton Park faithful.

Bradbury, recalled to Fratton Park because of injuries to fellow strikers Yacubu Ayegbini and Vincent Pericard, was on hand to capitalise on a fumble by Owls goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, who spilled Svetoslav Todorov's cross-shot.

The former Manchester City striker collected the ball, turned and curled it high into the net.

But despite having much more possession than their opponents, Harry Redknapp's side were unable to extend their advantage and the one-goal lead had nerves on edge.

Portsmouth had a good spell at the start of the second half with Steve Stone missing a fine chance from close range, Bradbury having an effort saved by Pressman with his feet and Paul Merson curling a free-kick over the crossbar within four minutes of the restart.

Before the celebrations could begin in earnest Wednesday's Shefki Kuqi provided a scare when he headed the ball over the crossbar, and 14 minutes from time Westwood confirmed that the champagne would have to be put on ice.

The equaliser came just three minutes after Owls manager Chris Turner had gambled by replacing strikers Kuqi and Lloyd Owusu with Reddy and Grant Holt.

Goalkeeper Shaka Hislop failed to clear the ball effectively and it dropped to defender Ashley Westwood, who launched it towards goal and Linvoy Primus was unable to clear it before it had crossed the line.

And two minutes into stoppage time Portsmouth were stunned again as Reddy, on loan from Sunderland, kept cool in a one-on-one situation with Hislop and rolled the ball into the net to give Wednesday fresh hope in their battle to avoid the drop.
