SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY REPORTS 2000-2001

Sheffield Wednesday 2 Burnley 0

A vintage performance from Sheffield Wednesday forward Gerald Sibon helped the Owls extend their unbeaten run under caretaker boss Peter Shreeves.

Sibon sealed the win for the Owls with a calmly-stroked 70th-minute penalty - his 11th goal of the season.

The Dutch star also played an instrumental role in Wednesday's opener, by lining up Ian Hendon to fire home from 10 yards.

Burnley's best spell of the game came just after half time. But the Owls, who have lost just once in their seven games under Shreeves, hung on to secure the points.

The home side had enjoyed the better of the play in the first 45 minutes.

On 19 minutes Trond Soltvedt forced Burnley keeper Nik Michopoulos into a fine one-handed save.

Then Sibon's free-kick was flicked on to Bromby at the back post, but Michopoulos made a brilliant reaction save from the defender's attempt.

Despite Burnley fielding a 4-3-3 formation they rarely troubled Owls' keeper Kevin Pressman

Lee Briscoe, who was making his first return to Hillsborough since signing from the Owls, delivered a dangerous curling shot which skimmed off the heads of a crowd of players before Pressman tipped the ball wide.

As the half-time whistle drew near, the Owls broke the deadlock. Sibon played a delightful defence-splitting pass which was raced onto by Hendon, who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

After half-time Burnley started brightly as they looked to get back on level terms, Ian Moore's turn-and-shot forcing Pressman into a low save.

The visitors continued to press the Wednesday defence further into their own half, but the Owls broke clear to score the decisive goal.

Sibon was again the brains behind the move with a delightful chip into the Burnley box which was met by Efan Ekoku. The former Wimbledon striker was then upended by Burnley defender Steve Davis as Ekoku looked to shoot.

Sibon stepped up to calmly slot the ball into the right-hand corner.

Burnley kept hopes of a comeback alive by continuing to create opportunities, Davis' long drive forcing Pressman into a fine save.

But Wednesday's second goal was a real body blow to Burnley as Wednesday secured their second consecutive win.
