Sheffield Wednesday climbed further away from the relegation mire after
staging a marvellous comeback at the Hawthorns to dent West Brom's push for the
play-offs.
Albion had the best possible start, taking the lead in the fifth minute when
ginger-haired hitman Lee Hughes claimed his 20th strike of the season.
But Wednesday levelled with a cracking header from on-loan Trond Soltvedt and
a second half strike from Andy Booth guaranteed the all-important points.
It was Gary Megson's high-flying Albion who were first to threaten with keeper
Kevin Pressman making a marvellous second-minute save to push round the post a
hard-angled drive from the dangerous Hughes.
But, just three minutes later, Hughes got his name on the scoresheet with a
powerful header into the far corner of the net from an inch-perfect left wing
corner from Ruel Fox.
But Albion, instead of piling on the pressure, eased off and Wednesday came
close to levelling in the 12th minute when Soltvedt got in a glancing header
that was just held on the line by the diving Russell Hoult.
But it was 1-1 in first half injury time when Soltvedt claimed his first goal
for Wednesday in his sixth game for the club with a marvellous header to a cross
from Alan Quinn.
From the restart it was again Wednesday who held the attacking reins and
Soltvedt was unlucky in the 47th minute with a shot that beat Hoult only to
rattle the near post.
Wednesday continued to press and they took their points tally to 13 in six
games when Booth notched their all-important winner in the 70th minute.
Ian Hendon crossed and Booth, back with Wednesday after his loan spell with
Spurs, made no mistake at close range to make it 2-1.
