An injury-time header from Phil Jagielka secured a late point for Sheffield
United as they came from two goals behind to draw with West Ham.
The Hammers were 3-1 up at half-time thanks to goals from Michael Carrick, Jon
Harley and Marlon Harewood but Neil Warnock's men fought their way back into the
match as debutant Paul Shaw made it 3-2 before Jagielka's dramatic equaliser.
Warnock kept faith with Wayne Allison and hat-trick hero Paul Peschisolido up
front following last week's 3-0 win over Gillingham.
And just five minutes into the match, Peschisolido again proved his worth when
the ball he played out to Nick Montgomery was returned, allowing the Canadian to
put the hosts ahead.
The Hammers immediately looked to get back on level terms and their
persistence was rewarded in the 19th minute when David Connolly's pass picked
out Carrick, who slotted the ball past Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.
West Ham then spectacularly took the lead three minutes later when Harley
launched an unstoppable shot from outside the area.
The visitors were now starting to control the match and had the chance to add
a third, but Harewood was unable to direct his shot past the Sheffield United
defence.
Minutes later, however, Harewood had better success as he further stretched
West Ham's lead with a goal from Matthew Etherington's cross.
Keen to find a way back into the match, Sheffield United began the second half
energetically and a corner from Michael Tonge posed an early threat for the
Hammers as Chris Morgan rose in the area, but the defender failed to put enough
power in his header.
Although the match briefly lost its explosive edge, the home side continued to
press for a goal and found themselves back in the match in the 73rd minute when
substitute and new signing Shaw netted.
Shaw, who moved to Bramall Lane from Gillingham this week, found himself on
the end of Stuart McCall's cross and was able to reduce the deficit.
The strike immediately brought the match to life again and three minutes later
United were handed the chance to equalise when Peschisolido was brought down in
the area by Anton Ferdinand.
However, Tonge's penalty was kept out by a magnificent save from Stephen
Bywater on his first start in three years for West Ham.
Seemingly undeterred by the miss, the Blades pushed again but Montgomery could
only watch as his shot went agonisingly wide of the left post.
But having come so close to an equaliser, the Yorkshire side eventually found
a way through deep in injury time when Jagielka rose to meet Tonge's corner and
headed the ball in to steal a late draw.
