Darren Kenton's own goal restored Reading back into third place in Division
One and further dented Norwich's play-off aspirations.
The deadlock was finally broken in a scrappy encounter 16 minutes from time
when Kenton sliced an Andy Hughes cross into the back of the net past a helpless
Rob Green.
Reading's first win at Carrow Road since 1957 saw them climb back above
Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United while Norwich's third straight defeat
means they are now seven points adrift of a play-off spot.
In-form Reading striker Nicky Forster, with four goals in as many games, had
his side's best two chances.
First he squandered the opportunity to give the Royals a half-time lead when
he screwed his shot wide of the far post.
He had another sight of goal five minutes after the break, but shot straight
at Norwich goalkeeper Rob Green.
Norwich had the best chance of the game a minute later.
Phil Mulryne swung over a cross but Steen Nedergaard produced a soft header
from close range which went straight at American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.
Reading were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty in the 66th minute as
Nathan Tyson fell under the challenge of Nedergaard, but referee Steve Baines
waved away their appeals.
After a scrappy opening half hour, in which neither goalkeeper was tested, it
was Reading who came so close to taking the lead, but James Harper saw his shot
rebounded of a post.
Iwan Roberts, on as a late substitute, headed wide in the last minute to cap
another disappointing night for Norwich.
