QPR REPORTS 1998-1999

QPR 0 Huddersfield 1

QPR dominated this FA Cup clash for almost the entire 90 minutes at Loftus Road but it will be Huddersfield's name that goes into the hat for the fourth round.

Rangers laid siege to the visitors' goal in an incredibly one-sided second half but despite a whole host of efforts from Kevin Gallen, Iain Dowie and Gavin Peacock to name but a few, they were unable to beat Town keeper Nico Vaesen.

Rangers should have been ahead as early as the third minute when Paul Murray and Gallen played a delightful one-two and then Murray pulled the ball back from the by line.

Peacock somehow managed to shoot over from a couple of yards.

There were calls for a penalty on 14 minutes when Peacock put in Gallen and he seemed to be up-ended by Vaesen only for the referee for point for a corner.

Karl Ready, Steve Slade and Matthew Rose all had first-half chances either blocked or saved.

The alarm bells should have been ringing for Rangers on 37 minutes when Wayne Allison headed Steve Jenkins' cross just over but they were ignored as five minutes later the visitors snatched an unlikely lead.

This time it was Grant Johnson who sent over the cross and Allison's glancing header gave Ludek Miklosko no chance.

The second half was held up for almost 20 minutes after a freak hail and electrical storm had the players dashing for cover, but on their return Rangers took even greater control with assistant boss Dowie coming off the bench to dominate in the air.

On 58 minutes Peacock's corner fell to the feet of Ready whose shot crashed against the cross bar while moments later Keith Rowland's cross was met by Dowie but he headed too close to the keeper.

The pressure continued and Gallen forced a good save from Vaesen with a 20-yard shot while Dowie put Rose away on 62 minutes only for his attempt at a chip to be well-clutched by Vaesen.

Still Rangers came forward and Rose's pass was helped on by Slade towards Rowland but he couldn't get in the vital touch while Peacock headed over Rowland's cross from just six yards.

Rangers were simply out of luck and Huddersfield could even have added to their tally when first Rob Edwards hit the bar from 30 yards and the substitute Darren Edmondson forced a fine save from Miklosko.

Rangers' last chance came right on time when Peacock's cross picked out Dowie but his diving header from just six yards flew inches wide.
