QPR could only manage a draw against Leeds despite a resurgent second-half
performance in this Coca-Cola Championship encounter at Loftus Road where both
sides were reduced to 10 men.
Seth Johnson had put Leeds ahead in the first-half before Kevin Gallen
levelled with a late goal to reward the home side's determined second-half
performance, which also saw Shaun Derry and Adam Miller both shown the red
card.
Both sides look certain to be playing Championship football next season and
there was little urgency from either team in the opening exchanges with only a
handful of chances created between the two sides.
QPR had started strongly enough and won the first corner of the game in the
seventh minute after a Miller free-kick was put behind by Derry.
Lee Cook's inswinging corner was headed clear but only as far as Gino Padula
who picked up the ball on the edge of the box but his shot went wide of the
Leeds goal.
The Hoops won a second corner in the 21st minute but Miller's inswinger was
easily cleared by Gylfi Einarsson.
And it was Leeds who took the lead in the 24th minute from their first corner
of the game. Gary Kelly swung the ball in from the left which was only half
cleared by QPR's defence to midfielder Johnson who made no mistake when he
volleyed the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the area.
The goal buoyed Leeds and they continued to enjoy the better of the play but
without creating any clear-cut chances.
Jamie Cureton was brought on for the injured Paul Furlong in the 34th minute
and the former Reading striker should have drawn the Hoops level with
practically his first touch of the game but his goalbound header was cleared off
the line by Clarke Carlisle.
Another QPR corner from Cook was cleared by Leeds as the Hoops looked to draw
level but they had to settle for going into the break a goal behind.
Gallen's shot straight after half-time whistled past the upright as QPR came
out determined to get back into the game.
The Hoops then won a succession of corners and the third by Cook forced
Einarsson to almost put the ball in his own net when he made the clearance.
Rob Hulse had Leeds' first chance of the second half when his long-range
effort was saved by QPR goalkeeper Chris Day just after the hour.
Youngster Stefan Bailey, making his first senior start for QPR, then saw his
25-yard shot fly over the bar as they continued to press for a goal.
And Leeds' attempts to hold back QPR saw them reduced to 10 men in the 70th
minute when Derry was shown a red card for violent conduct.
QPR had another chance from a corner by Miller who swung the ball into the box
towards Dan Shittu who headed over.
But the Hoops deservedly drew level in the 84th minute through Gallen. The
striker picked up a pass from Shabazz Baidoo on the edge of the area and fired
the ball into the back of the net.
They continued to attack straight after the goal and Neil Sullivan saved a
Gallen free-kick two minutes later before Cureton's shot went wide.
Gallen should have won the game for QPR in the 88th minute but he shot towards
Sullivan when should really have scored.
Miller was dismissed for a second bookable offence in injury time but QPR
failed to find a second goal and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
