Preston recorded a convincing 5-1 win over neighbours Morecambe to ensure a safe passage into the second round of the Carling Cup.

Morecambe midfielder Mark Duffy had a penalty saved by North End goalkeeper Andy Lonergan in the 30th minute and the Coca-Cola Championship side took control thereafter.

Chris Brown headed them into the lead and Stephen Elliott doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time before Barry Nicholson, Neal Trotman and Neil Mellor netted after the break.

Brown headed home a 33rd-minute opener after connecting with a cross from the right by Michael Hart and shortly before the break Elliott rose highest to head home a cross from Ross Wallace.

Alan Irvine's men continued to dominate and they claimed a third in the 57th minute when another fine cross from Wallace was headed in by midfielder Nicholson.

Twelve minutes later, it was 4-0 when substitute Trotman made an immediate impact by powering home a header from Nicholson's left-wing cross.

Preston added a fifth in the closing stages when Mellor rifled home a cross from Chris Sedgwick before Michael Twiss fired in a low shot to give Morecambe a late consolation.
