Plymouth recorded their second 3-0 home victory of the week with goals from
Paul Wotton, Dexter Blackstock and Scott Taylor against 10-man Crewe .
Wotton fired home in the 24th minute before Crewe defender Stephen Foster was
sent off three minutes before the break.
Substitute Blackstock scored with his first shot of the game before Taylor
wrapped up the points in the 92nd minute.
Crewe went into the game without a win in their last seven attempts but it was
they who attacked first when Luke Varney saw his shot blocked after just 14
seconds.
Plymouth, 3-0 victors over Sheffield United on Tuesday, had their first
attempt on goal in the 19th minute when Nick Chadwick, yet to score since his
£250,000 move from Everton earlier this month, saw his volleyed shot blocked by
Foster.
The Pilgrims started to assert their authority on the game as David Norris'
long-range effort forced a save from Clayton Ince.
And they did not have to wait long to take the lead as Paul Connolly's cross
was parried by Ince before Chadwick turned provider to have his pass fired home
by Wotton from the edge of the box.
Wotton's corner was then headed wide by Graham Coughlan two minutes later as
Plymouth looked to double their advantage before the break.
Crewe were struggling to create chances of their own as Plymouth continued to
attack and Akos Buzsaky's right-footed volley was blocked by Colin Murdock
before Coughlan's header was tipped over by Ince.
And things got worse for the Railwaymen as Foster was shown the red card for a
foul on Chadwick shortly before half-time.
Crewe came out attacking in the second half as Kenny Lunt's volley from
distance was saved by Luke McCormick before Varney curled shot was also saved by
the 6ft shot-stopper.
But it was Plymouth who continued to create the better chances as they looked
to further extend their lead. Buzsaky's effort from 25-yards was saved by Ince
while Chadwick's shot was blocked by Lunt.
Plymouth brought on striker Blackstock just before the hour and he made his
mark eight minutes later.
The on-loan Southampton man collected the ball on the edge of the area and
fired past Ince with his first shot of the match for his second goal in as many
games.
Blackstock continued to cause problems for the Crewe defence and his
78th-minute shot was saved by Ince before he fired wide a minute later.
Varney headed wide from six yards in the 80th minute in a rare attack for the
Railwaymen but Plymouth always looked the more likely to score next.
Peter Gilbert's cross was headed goalwards by the lively Norris but his
close-range effort was saved by Ince.
Crewe substitute Mark Rivers saw his volley from the edge of the area go wide
two minutes before the end but it was the Pilgrims who further extended their
lead deep into stoppage time through Taylor to wrap up the three points.
