Rory Fallon's third goal of the season extended Plymouth's unbeaten run to three Championship matches, at home to Doncaster, and hauled them out of the bottom three.

Recalled striker Fallon side-footed home from 10 yards to give his team a 2-1 win, following a cross from the left by full-back Gary Sawyer - after Rovers had been reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute following a second caution for captain Martin Woods.

Fallon nodded the ball down in the 71st minute, and strike partner Jamie Mackie had a close-range shot saved at point-blank range by Rovers' experienced goalkeeper Neil Sullivan. However, the ball spun out for Fallon to finish after all.

Argyle boss Paul Sturrock said: "Rory works best in their box. That's where he is going to get goals, because of his height.

"That's three goals he's got in the last five starts for us, and he's proving to be a real handful.

"Doncaster are a difficult team to play against, difficult to break down. If you go out of shape against them you lose, which has happened to us before.

"I thought we were very disciplined. It was always going to be a tight game, and I did feel that the chances we created meant we slightly shaded it as far as the result was concerned."

Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll explained his team were never going to give up on chasing all three points - even after Woods' dismissal.

"Going down to 10 men is not a reason to throw in the towel or anything," he said.

"You just have got to take it on the chin. Our game plan didn't change. What we tried to do - win the match - doesn't change; it just makes it that little more difficult.

"We came in at half-time and we thought if we could step it up a little bit we could win the game.

"Even with 10 men we thought we could get something from it, and we had one or two good chances.

"I think they [Plymouth] have a physical presence, so any long throw-ins or corners into the box are going to give us a problem."

Argyle took the lead in the 26th minute when man of the match Alan Judge - on a season long-loan from Blackburn - converted Alan Gow's left-wing cross.

Rovers restored parity within three minutes as Woods' free kick from the left was met by midfielder Dean Shiels' strike.

Fallon blocked the first, but Shiels' second shot was drilled through the Kiwi's legs and in.

Judge looked to make it 2-1 in first-half stoppage time. But his goalbound effort was stopped by Rovers defender Sam Hird, who also made a telling tackle to deny Gow after Rovers had gone down to 10.

Rovers striker Billy Sharp also went close when he latched on to James Coppinger's inch-perfect through ball, before sending an angled drive from the right just past the far post.
