Nottingham Forest took another step towards the First Division title with a
3-0 win at Bradford City.
Their winning margin was rough justice on a Bradford side who had more of the
chances in a one-sided first half.
But Kevin Campbell gave them a lesson in finishing when he put Forest ahead
after 38 minutes against the run of play with a smart left-foot shot low into
the far corner of the net.
The turning point came in the 63rd minute when England international Steve
Stone ran onto a through pass and drew Bradford goalkeeper Gary Walsh before
slipping the ball into the path of unmarked Scot Gemmill to slot the ball into
the empty net.
Bradford players protested strongly that Stone was offside when he received
the pass and Walsh was booked for continuing his protests.
Forest took charge for the first time in the game after that goal and
completed the scoring with a smart third goal after 83 minutes.
Quick thinking by Andy Johnson enabled him to pick up a loose ball in the
Bradford box before supplying Chris Bart-Williams with the easiest of chances.
Bradford were left to regret some first half misses, notably after 17 minutes
when Jamie Lawrence provided a great opportunity for Craig Ramage with a defence
splitting pass.
The pass left Ramage with only goalkeeper Dave Beasant to beat, but his shot
lacked power and the keeper made an easy save.
Ramage had the ball in the net after 27 minutes only to see his effort
disallowed for a foul by Robert Steiner and Edinho on defender Steve Chettle,
but he was unlucky not to score after 33 minutes.
Ramage twisted in the air to direct a header towards the near corner only to
see Beasant dive full length to turn the ball behind.
