Dave Beasant, the goalkeeper whose penalty save won the FA Cup for Wimbledon
10 years ago, handed Charlton their ticket to the fourth round with a
64th-minute clanger.
Forest, 2-0 down at the interval, had just clawed their way back into the tie
through substitute Pierre Van Hooijdonk when Beasant failed to hold Shaun
Newton's cross and the ball ran lose for Carl Leaburn to restore Charlton's
two-goal advantage.
Charlton top scorer Clive Mendonca added a fourth 10 minutes later - ending a
four-game barren run for his 15th goal of the season - to put the game out of
Forest's reach.
In fairness to Beasant, torrential rain at the start of the game and a
swirling wind made conditions difficult for goalkeepers and for defenders in
general.
Charlton took charge of the tie when they scored twice in four minutes shortly
before half-time.
Welsh international John Robinson gave the home side a 38th-minute lead when
he put the ball past Beasant from close range after defender Alan Rogers stuck
out a foot to deflect a Leaburn shot and the ball stuck in the mud.
Four minutes later, Beasant punched a corner straight to Steve Brown and the
Charlton full-back drove it back through a crowd of players into the Forest
net.
At the start of the second half, Forest brought on Van Hooijdonk, who had been
struggling with a groin injuiry, but it was Ian Moore who threatened the
Charlton goal with a shot from the edge of the penalty area which goalkeepeer
Mike Sullen turned for a corner from which Colin Cooper sent a flashing header
against Charlton's crossbar.
Van Hooijdonk put Forest back in the game after 56 minutes. Moore broke down
the right flank and put over a perfect cross for the Dutch striker to leave
Richard Rufus face down in the mud as he headed past Summon.
Eight minutes later, Beasant failed to hold Newton's cross and Leaburn shot
home from close range and Charlton put the result beyond doubt after 75
minutes.
Newton again worked his magic on the left flank and his centre was headed back
by Leaburn to the feet of Mendonca.
The little Charlton forward shot firmly into
the bottom corner of Beasant's net, leaving Forest to concentrate on their goal
of winning promotion back to the Premiership.
