Bristol City have confirmed Steve Brooker will definitely need a second operation on his injured knee.
The striker met with specialist Jonathon Webb on Monday and was told he will need 'clean up' on his knee, with an operation pencilled in for Friday.
Manager Gary Johnson told the club's official website: "It's bad news, but I see it as good news that Brooks has a date and the surgery can take place pretty quickly.
"The sooner he has the operation, the quicker he can get everything sorted."
Meanwhile club skipper Jamie McCombe had a mixed return on Tuesday night after scoring an own goal in a 2-1 reserve loss to Forest Green Rovers. Defender McCombe, who is recovering from a shin injury, played the full 90 minutes for the Robins second-string.
Johnson added: "We'll sit down with the physio and fitness coach and discuss what we can do to get these players to where they need to be for a first team return.
"We've got to make sure we get these lads games every week because there are big gaps between our reserves games."
City bounced back from McCombe's howler to equalise but a late goal consigned them to their first defeat of the season.
Johnson added: "From our point of view it was a poor game and Forest Green deserved to win - it was a very disappointing performance."
