Former Middlesbrough striker Jaime Moreno helped DC United dump Newcastle 3-1
in a friendly in Washington.
The Bolivian international scored one of the goals at the RFK Stadium as Bobby
Robson's side were given a pre-season wake-up call.
With just three days training in the locker, United looked heavy legged and
the game was lost by the time England captain Alan Shearer emerged from the
bench as a 67th-minute substitute.
Passes went astray and £7million new boy Carl Cort was well shackled by Carlos
Llamosa and Carey Talley.
A 66th-minute goal from Argentinian Daniel Cordone, another summer signing,
did little to inspire the visitors.
In contrast DC looked in total control from the 28th minute when Moreno
finished a flowing move featuring Marco Etcheverry and Bobby Convey with a
piercing left-foot drive.
Moreno flopped in his spell with Middlesbrough in the mid-1990s, making his
superb performance and well-taken goal all the more satisfying.
``It's great, just to prove to ourselves, that we're a good team,'' Moreno
said.
``Even though I know that they're in pre-season, they're working hard to get
back in shape. It was a great experience.
``It was really important for us. The confidence is the main thing now, and
we're going to try to keep doing it the same way.''
DC United scored again five minutes later after Moreno beat two Newcastle
defenders and won a corner. Etcheverry's offering floated beyond the back post,
but Chris Albright was in position to head the ball back into the six-yard box,
where an alert Llamosa tapped it home.
Pete Marino came on after half-time and quickly made an impression, adding to
DC's lead in the 51st minute.
Convey collected Etcheverry's pass six yards from goal and chipped the ball to
Marino, who fended off Magpie defender Aaron Hughes and headed the ball into the
gaping net.
The Magpies must now get motivated for the game against Columbus Crew on
Wednesday.
