Wigan's strike duo of Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts were both on target
against Millwall at the JJB Stadium to keep Paul Jewell's side at the top of the
table.
Ellington was given the opportunity to put his side in front after Gary Teale
was brought down in the box, and the striker confidently stroked the ball home
from the spot in the 58th minute.
Roberts wrapped up the win with a delicate chip over keeper Andy Marshall from
the edge of the box with eight minutes left to play.
Wigan imposed themselves on the game from the start with Ellington and Roberts
looking like they could cause Millwall difficulties.
Roberts did well to control a ball that looked to be going out before playing
a one-two with Lee McCullough and whipping in a left-footed cross that Millwall
captain Matt Lawrence headed away.
Latics midfielder Gary Teale then had a cross easily collected by 'keeper Andy
Marshall after a threatening run down the right.
Millwall then caused some confusion in the Wigan box but Paul Robinson's cross
was cleared by Nicky Eaden for a corner that was easily dealt with.
On another foray into the home side's half Millwall had an appeal for a
penalty turned down. Jody Morris' flick hit the arm of a Latics defender but
there was little disagreement when the referee waved play on.
Roberts then turned Robinson in the left channel but the ball bobbled and his
cross went out of play for a throw in. The former Bristol Rovers striker caused
havoc in the Lions' box in the 35th minute when he pulled the ball back for
Ellington whose left-footed strike was cleared off the line by a defender.
Graham Kavanagh tried his luck shortly after from 25 yards but his curling
shot failed to trouble Marshall.
Wigan began the second half with great urgency and Teale won a corner on the
right from Kavanagh's centre. Roberts almost found a way through with an
exquisite piece of control before the ball was flipped off his toe by one of
three defenders surrounding him.
Wigan then finally found the breakthrough they were looking for in the 58th
minute. Teale beat Tony Craig for pace and the left-back's desperate challenge
brought the Latics midfielder down in the box leaving the referee with no option
but to point to the spot.
Ellington coolly slotted his 21st goal of the season into the bottom corner of
the net to give the Championship pace-setters a richly deserved lead.
Ellington then had the ball in the net again but his effort was ruled out for
offside.
Jimmy Bullard began to make headway in the middle of the park and he cut
inside from the left only to fire a weak effort at goal.
Teale, visibly growing in confidence, beat Craig again and his superb
right-wing cross was met by Roberts who saw his header saved by Marshall.
Roberts then made sure of the three points when he picked up a loose ball 40
yards from goal, sprinting past Lawrence and clipped a delightful chip into the
corner of the net.
