Norwich remained in the hunt for a Division One play-off place with a vital victory over Millwall at The New Den.

Nigel Worthington's side, who ended a four-game losing run with victory over Coventry at Carrow Road on Saturday, move to within five points of sixth-placed Wolves with a game in hand.

Norwich, thrashed 4-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, took the lead in the eight minute.

Clint Easton drifted over a free-kick and the ball fell to Malky Mackay, who thundered a half-volley into the top corner from six yards to give Lions goalkeeper Tony Warner no chance.

Zema Abbey, whose last league goal came in the 1-1 draw at Grimsby on December 28, added a second seven minutes before the break, taking advantage of some hesitation in the Lions defence to score from close range.

Abbey had missed an earlier chance to put Norwich, with just one win in 12 league games on their travels, 2-0 ahead but Warner did well to block his shot.

Millwall have slumped into the bottom eight following a run of just one win in seven games. But it needed a fine finger-tip save from Norwich goalkeeper Rob Green to deny Neil Harris an equaliser.

Green was forced into action again in the 27th minute, keeping out Andy Roberts' drive from 30 yards.

Abbey wasted two chances to kill off the Lions early in the second half before Green again came to his side's rescue.

Green first punched away a fierce drive from Republic of Ireland international Steven Reid and then superbly kept out a Steve Claridge volley from six yards as the hosts tried to get back in the game.

Paul McVeigh hit the woodwork for Norwich with nine minutes remaining.

However, successive 2-0 wins have put the East Anglian side right back on track to repeat their feat of last season when they sneaked into the play-offs on the final day.
