Millwall pulled off a fine away win over Walsall at the Bescot Stadium after a sparkling second half performance.

Millwall had the better of the exchanges throughout but in the first half could find no way past James Walker in the home goal.

Walker pulled off a string of fine saves, leaving the game was goalless at the interval, but could do nothing to stop Millwall taking charge in the second period.

Millwall might well have gone ahead in the sixth minute but for Walker.

First he made a brilliant block from Richard Sadlier's shot and then, from the resulting corner, saved Darren Ward's close-range effort.

Walker easily dealt with a header from Sadlier, and then pulled off another fine save from Neil Harris from the left of the penalty area.

The resulting corner came out to Charley Hearn but he blazed his shot from 25 yards over the Walsall bar.

As the interval neared Walsall pressed forward, with Vinnie Samways, making his home debut, putting pressure on the Millwall defence.

Paul Ifill almost broke the deadlock at the start of the second half but the Millwall player put his shot from the right of the penalty area just wide.

Martin O'Connor then had a chance for Walsall but shot wide from 20 yards.

Millwall, who had always looked the most likely to score, broke the deadlock after 59 minutes when Harris seized on a loose ball at the edge of the area and hammered it into the top right-hand corner of the Walsall net, giving the gallant Walker no chance.

Three minutes later Millwall went further ahead when Ifill beat two defenders on the left and slipped the ball home from close range.

Walsall were not finished and Jorge Leitao shot just over the bar. Darren Wrack's 35-yard effort was well saved by Tony Warner and the keeper saved again, this time a 25-yard Samways shot.

Five minutes from time Walsall pulled back a consolation goal when substitute Junior met a Samways corner to stab the ball home from close range.
